It is that time of year to refocus our taste buds in the direction of weighty red wines that satisfy in the cool fall evenings. In our desert climate, whites and rosés surely serve well throughout the year, but in summer the reds we are putting into play now are simply ponderous. 2012 Project Paso Old Vine Zinfandel, Paso Robles

This Zinfandel shows its Paso Robles roots with explosive scents of plum, dark cherry, cracked white pepper and violet. As bold and rich as this wine is on the nose, it is similarly robust on the palate. Flavors of ripe raspberry, pomegranate and cinnamon bark invigorate the senses and deliver a lush softness to the palate.
2010 Four Vines Zinfandel, Truant Old Vine, California

The grapes in this blend come from vineyards in Paso Robles, Mendocino County, Cucamonga Valley, Lodi, Amador County and Russian River Valley. The Old Vine vineyard sources typically range from 30 to 100 years in age. The blend is 77% Zinfandel, 13% Syrah, 5% Petite Sirah, 3% Barbera and 2% Sangiovese. On the nose there are dark berry notes and spicy notes from oak aging. The wine drinks of juicy blackberry, ripe plums and a touch of blueberry. Generous in fruit flavors, plenty of structure and a velvety finish.
2011 Terra d’Oro Zinfandel Amador County

This savory Zinfandel displays vibrant aromas of rich, spicy clove and big, generous fruit with hints of vanilla that entice the nose. An abundance of plums and flavors of dense, juicy blackberries excites the senses with a round mouth-feel of well-integrated tannins on the finish. This wine is rich and powerful, and incredibly well-balanced. The Terra d’Oro Amador Zinfandel is enjoyable on its own, and especially complements anything barbecued.

The Heritage Vines Zinfandel benefited from the incredible growing conditions the season presented. Ripe clusters, full of intense flavor came into the winery at harvest.
