This Saturday we welcome back the Zaca Mesa Winery with new vintages of wonderful wines. This Central Coast winery from Santa Ynez Valley boasts some of the highest elevation vineyards in Santa Barbara County. Zaca Mesa makes wines from the Rhône varieties of France along with Chardonnay. The winery goes back to 1972 which makes it only the third winery in Santa Barbara County at that time. It was past winemaker, Daniel Gehrs, who realized that while Zaca Mesa’s vineyards were too far inland from the coast to produce quality Pinot Noir, and not quite hot enough to produce quality Cabernet Sauvignon. Turns out it was an ideal location for Rhône Varietals. Representing the winery is Matt Mauldin who will guide us through a tasting of, and understanding of, things Rhône.
2013 Zaca Mesa Viognier, Santa Ynez Valley
LIST PRICE 17.00; OUR PRICE 14.99
After early morning hand-harvesting, the Viognier was fermented in stainless steel tanks. Halfway through fermentation the wine was transferred into neutral French oak barrels (8+ years old). The short barrel aging of six months allowed the wine to gain texture and mouth-feel while retaining its brightness. It displays aromas of honeysuckle and ripe peaches while the palate has notes of ripe apricot, melon, lychee and a lingering touch of minerality, which is typical of the vineyard.
2012 Zaca Mesa Z Blanc, Santa Ynez Valley
LIST PRICE 20.00; OUR PRICE 17.99
This is as close as is possible for a California winery to craft a classic southern Rhône white blend. Each grape adds its own personality: Roussanne(45%) adds flavors of figs, honey and spice; Grenache Blanc (44%) brings notes of green apple, melon and mineral; Viognier (10%) adds a layer of beautiful white flowers and stone fruits. The wine displays rich aromas of ripe pear, cantaloupe, sweet citrus and honeyed spices. The fleshy palate shows ripeness with rich stone fruits, honey and hints of mineral.
2012 Zaca Mesa Z Cuvée, Santa Ynez Valley
LIST PRICE 20.00; OUR PRICE 17.99
This is a complex Rhône-style blend: the Grenache (50%) adds rich raspberry aromas and flavors; Mourvèdre (45%) brings notes of blueberry, meat and spice; the Cinsault (5%) brings a touch of dusty berry. Z Cuvée is finely balanced with medium weight on the palate while the tannins make their presence known. A food friendly wine, it is very approachable now, but will benefit from some bottle age.
2011 Zaca Mesa Syrah, Santa Ynez Valley
LIST PRICE 24.00; OUR PRICE 21.95
The 2011 Syrah incorporates a tiny splash of Viognier and spent 16 months in French oak (18% new). Its vibrant purple color is followed by classic Syrah characteristics of savory herbs, graphite, dried pepper and the darker fruitiness of blackberry and cassis. Medium to full-bodied, nicely concentrated, ripe and with some chewy tannin, it still shines for its pretty, pure fruit and solid overall balance.
2011 Zaca Mesa Syrah, Reserve, Santa Ynez Valley
LIST PRICE 44.00; OUR PRICE 39.99
During the three week fermentation, the skins were punched-down by hand twice a day to develop rich color and fine tannins. Once dry, the wine was placed into new French oak barrels for 21 months to age. It shows a classic Syrah structure with bold tannins and bright acidity. The fruit is dark with blackberry and cassis layered with savory herbs, dark chocolate and violets. The long finish features a brightness of fruit and richness in the mouth that is a joy to experience.
