The major red wine grape of the Toscana region is Sangiovese, especially in Chianti. For a wine to retain the name of Chianti, it must be produced with at least 80% Sangiovese grapes. In 1995 it became legal to produce Chianti with 100% Sangiovese and one of our wines for Saturday is a wonderful example. Chianti wine was historically associated with a squat bottle enclosed in a straw basket, called a fiasco (flask). In general, Chianti Classicos are described as medium-bodied wines with firm, dry tannins. The characteristic aroma is cherry but it can also carry nutty and floral notes as well. The Riserva designation requires the wine be aged at least 38 months. To awaken our palates, we will begin the event with a sparkler from the Veneto.
Zardetto Prosecco, Veneto
List price 15.00; our price 12.99
Made from Glera grapes this wine has elegant, refined bubbles that form a hearty white froth. Aromas of white flowers, apricot and herbs create a delicately soft bouquet. The palate is comprised of citrus, orange blossoms and stone fruits. Fresh citrus and floral notes linger on the finish. It's an ideal apéritif and the perfect choice for parties, as well as an excellent base for sparkling cocktails.
2015 Ponte Vecchio Chianti
List price 13.00; our price 9.99
This is actually a solid little wine; very quaffable with the dustiness and black cherry notes of what Tuscan Sangiovese should be as an everyday wine. It is a good pizza wine at an excellent price and presented in the old fashioned fiasco straw basket bottle. Bring back memories?
2012 Mazzoni Sangiovese Merlot Blend
List price 14.00; our price 9.99
We have restocked on this very nice value wine that we have shown before. Here are fruity notes of red berry fruit, plums, blackberry, balsamic notes, sweet spices, tobacco leaf and licorice. It is warm, soft, and balanced, with velvet-smooth tannins and a lingering finish.
2015 Pasqua Chianti
List price 12.00; our price 9.99
The ruby red color is moving towards garnet with ageing. It has the characteristic bouquet, fruity with a violet fragrance and a slight hint of cherries. It is dry, balanced and lightly tannic which turns into velvety softness.
Look to pair it with spicy pasta dishes, roasts and grilled veal.
2012 Terrabianca Scassino Chianti Classico
List price 21.50; our price 19.99
The vineyard’s name comes from ‘scasso’, stony soil, which makes this terrain difficult to cultivate but fabulous in terms of fruit and concentration. It is an appealing, delightful, well balanced red with lively notes of raspberry and blueberry, with excellent structure.
2013 San Felice il Grigio Chianti Classico Reserva
List price 26.00; our price 23.95
On the nose, it is deep and persistent with the typical notes of sweet violet and wild red berries. It is an austere, full-bodied wine, with succulent tannins and bright acidity. Enriched with an aromatic complexity from a delicate dosing of wood, it pairs well with grilled meats and wild fowl dishes.
