In 1863, pioneering vintner George Whitman planted the first grapes and built a winery on the 60 acre estate that would eventually become known as Valley of the Moon Winery. His enterprise was successful and, in just four short years, the winery was producing more than 50,000 gallons of wine and 2,000 gallons of brandy. Through the next century the estate passed through other hands and ultimately the pain of Prohibition. The Tony Stewart family now runs the property and is dedicated to quality winemaking practices producing smaller yields of higher quality wines. Joining us Saturday is Marty Merritt who has long represented these brands as well as Kenwood Vineyards and is a font of information on the wines of Sonoma County.
