It’s been over 40 years since Charlie Wagner founded Caymus vineyards in Napa Valley, a premiere winery in one of the premiere winegrowing regions in the world. It was named “Caymus Vineyards,” after a Mexican land grant owned by George Yount that had once encompassed their land. The later generations of the Wagner family are proud of the fact that Caymus Vineyards is the only winery in the world to have twice earned Wine Spectator’s highest accolade, the Top Wine of the Year Award. In the late 1980’s a new blended white wine was introduced which they named “Conundrum”. At the same time the Wagners began planting vines in the Santa Lucia Highlands. Mer Soleil Chardonnay became one of the results and is very popular today. It is named for the two forces of nature that strongly influence this wine: sea (mer) and sun (soleil).
Featured Wines:
2015 Mer Soleil Silver Unoaked Chardonnay, Monterey Co.
List price 20.00; Our price 17.99
The Mer Soleil Silver is a pure, clean expression of Chardonnay that never sees the inside of an oak barrel. It is fermented and aged in a combination of stainless steel and small concrete tanks imported from Burgundy, France. This fresh wine features aromas of flower blossoms and crisp pears. It is round and layered on the palate, with vibrant acidity and depth.
2015 Conundrum White Blend, California
List price 20.00; Our price 14.99
Blending varietals when Conundrum White was created more than 25 years ago was not a typical practice. Since then, this wine has attracted a loyal following, especially since the sweetness level has dropped. While the exact blend varies, every vintage includes Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon, Muscat Canelli, and Viognier. The wine is quite versatile, with intriguing tropical notes and natural acidity.
2015 Mer Soleil Reserve Chardonnay, Santa Lucia Highlands
List price 30.00; Our price 27.99
The Highlands, located within Monterey County, feature morning fog, bright sunshine and gusting winds. This enables longer “hang time” for the grapes, resulting in wines of intense, complex character. Along with fresh, bright aromas and the taste of tropical fruits including mango and coconut, this wine has a vibrant acidity balanced by the lush flavors of fully ripe fruit, deftly balanced on the long buttery finish.
Conundrum Rosé, California
List price 20.00; Our price 14.99
The Conundrum Rosé is made from only one variety, Valdigué, which remains largely unknown and grows only in small quantities in California. The goal is to create a Rosé that is uniquely bright and fresh, with more character than people typically expect. Fruity but not at all sweet, with scents and flavors of strawberries and ripe peaches, this wine is perfect for spring and summer. Try serving it on the rocks.
2015 Conundrum Red Blend, California
List price 23.00; Our price 19.99
Sourced from premier winegrowing regions where the Wagners have excellent contracts, Conundrum Red features dark red varietals including Zinfandel and Petite Sirah. It is rich, complex and approachable. With lush flavors of cherries and baking chocolate, this wine has fine tannins that create a silky smoothness.
2015 Caymus Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley
List price 90.00; Our price 86.00
Caymus has a signature style that is dark in color, with rich fruit and ripe, velvety tannins, as approachable in youth as in maturity. The Cabernet grapes are farmed in eight of Napa’s 16 sub-appellations, with diversification enabling the winemaker to make the best possible wine in a given year. It offers layered, lush aromas and flavors, including cocoa, cassis and ripe dark berries. 94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
