John Van Ruiten Sr. settled in the Lodi area shortly after World War II. It was the dream of the young Dutch immigrant to grow quality grapes and produce truly outstanding wines. His desire was realized when in the early 1950’s John bought his first vineyard property. He then planted Zinfandel vines and began growing wine grapes in the Lodi Appellation. Today, Van Ruiten is not just one of the Lodi Viticultural Area’s most consistent wine producers, but also one of the region’s largest vineyard holders. Most of what the Van Ruiten family grows actually is sold to other wineries. The family believes that a wine should speak for itself by minimizing wine making enhancement procedures and allowing the grapes a more pure expression. Also minimized is the impact of oak as a significant component.
