The Central Coast wine region stretches south from the San Francisco Bay to Santa Barbara County, about 250 miles, and produces approximately 15% of the wine from California. The coastal areas produce primarily Chardonnay and Pinot Noir given the cool maritime climate. Inland areas do better with the French varietals that have come to us from Bordeaux and the Rhone Valley. This Saturday we are tasting wines from Monterey County, the Santa Rita Hills, the Santa Maria Valley and from Paso Robles.
2015 Mer Soleil Silver Unoaked Chardonnay, Monterey County
List price 20.00; Our price 17.99
The oak free Chardonnay shows hints of lemon zest along with pineapple and peach flavors. From being fruit forward and fresh, the wine finishes with a spicy, creamy texture. It balances out with a nice minerality.
2016 Lafond Chardonnay, Santa Rita Hills
List price 23.00; Our price 19.99
The Santa Rita Hills is a small appellation at the western end of the Santa Ynez Valley that has gained national recognition for its Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The Valley runs west to east, opening a gap in the coastal range and allowing the late afternoon ocean fog to roll in where it lingers until early morning. The fog cools the vines from the day’s summer heat and it is this combination of warm days and cool nights that gives the wine its complexity as well as providing acidity to give it structure. The Lafond received a Gold Medal from the 2018 Monterey International Wine Competition and 92 points from Wine Enthusiast: “Lemon peels, sea salt, hazelnut and honeysuckle aromas play up the more voluptuous side of Chardonnay, and hint at marshmallow without going so far. The palate is surprisingly zippy with acid and Meyer lemon zest, but also shows richer hints of browned butter and toasted almond toward the finish. It's a crowd-pleaser for many tastes.”
2016 MCV Viognier, Paso Robles
List price 30.00; Our price 23.50
The wine shows aromas of jasmine, honey and citrus peel. The flavors tend toward tea, lemongrass, almond and candied lemon peel. Exotic aromas of wild lime and pear show on the nose of this bottling. Apple and ripe pear flavors show on the palate, which shows decent restraint for this grape, especially in a warmer region. This is a big, heavy, rich white wine. It will pair with a huge variety of foods or go perfectly by itself.
2016 Cambria Rosé of Pinot Noir, Santa Maria Valley
List price 24.00; Our price 21.99
A more rounded, layered style of rosé, this 100% Pinot Noir gives up notes of ripe cherries and raspberries as well as medium-bodied richness and a clean, refreshing finish. It's a food rosé to drink and enjoy over the remaining summer period.
2014 Fess Parker Pinot Noir, Santa Rita Hills
List price 26.00; Our price 24.50
This wine displays aromas of cherry, forest, black tea, baking spices, sandalwood, strawberry and vanilla. On the palate, it unfolds flavors of cherry, cranberry, red currant, grilled herbs, raspberry and vanilla.
Robert Parker's Wine Advocate gives it a 91-point rating: ”A killer value, the plump, spicy, fruit-filled and complex 2014 Pinot Noir is medium-bodied, charming, silky and layered on the palate, with tons of charm.”
WS90Wine Spectator awards it a 90-point rating: “Powerful and well-structured, with savory accents to the red currant, plum and spiced cherry flavors. Hints of mocha show on the richly spiced finish.”
2014 Pomar Junction Cabernet Sauvignon, Paso Robles
List price 24.00; Our price 19.99
This dark 100% estate grown Cabernet reflects dark berry fruits and hints of allspice. The black current flavors and silky tannins contribute to a rich rounded effect best described as voluptuous. Toasty oak in the finish.
