Although the Russians planted the first vineyards in Sonoma County (about 1812), they lasted only until 1841 when their Fort Ross settlement failed. The Spanish Fathers started planting in 1824 near the town of Sonoma, which, to Native Americans, means “many moons”. It was General Vallejo who founded and named the town, then began cultivating wines. Following the Civil War, the wine industry grew rapidly, hitting some major bumps along the way, such as the debilitating Phylloxera epidemic in 1873 and Prohibition in 1919. Eventually, the industry would get back on track and in the 1960’s the wine boom began. Most of the big name wineries were started then, in the 70’s and in the 80’s. The growth continues unabated and today there are almost 700 bonded wineries in Sonoma County.
