This Saturday we are showing the wines of six different wineries from Sonoma County. The first five are along the Russian River area through Alexander Valley and the last wine we will taste is from Sonoma Valley, also known as “Valley of the Moon”. This last wine is a Cabernet Sauvignon from our cellared wines and is from the vintage year of 1990, twenty-six vintages ago.
Featured Wines:
2014 Simi Chardonnay, Sonoma County
List price 14.00; Our price 11.99
Founded in 1876 by Giuseppe and Pietro Simi, the beautiful stone building and grounds near Healdsburg have been a Sonoma County fixture for 140 years. In this wine, look for aromatic notes of pineapple, peach, pear, citrus and green apple that are lightly spiced with toasty oak. It all comes together on the palate with well-defined, fresh flavors of tangerine, lemon curd, stone fruit, white peach, and nectarine. The lightly toasted and warm oak character is balanced with a delicate, zesty, lemon citrus finish.
2014 B.R. Cohn Chardonay, Russian River Valley
List price 20.00; Our price 15.99
In 1970, Bruce Cohn met and became the manager of the Doobie Brothers, which he managed for 45 years. In 1974, to keep some sanity and preserve his family's quality of life, Bruce purchased an old dairy in Glen Ellen. Mentored by Charlie Wagner of Caymus, Bruce had great success selling grapes to other wineries and founded B.R. Cohn Winery in 1984. This Chardonnay is typical of cool climate regions that allow the grapes to develop ripe, rich flavors, while maintaining a bright and refreshing acidity. Cohn Chardonnays typically show a clean apple character laced with spicy oak.
2012 Murphy Goode Red Blend, California
List price 12.00; Our price 9.99
Back in 1985, Tim Murphy, Dale Goode and Dave Ready began creating Fume Blanc and Chardonnay from Murphy Ranch and Murphy-Goode Vineyard in Sonoma County. Murphy and Goode were growers who helped to pioneer Alexander Valley. They brought wire trellising, broad scale drip irrigation and leaf pulling to Alexander Valley. The current line-up, includes Bordeaux varieties and Zinfandels. This wine is a blend of Syrah, Merlot, Petit Sirah, and Zinfandel. It is a wine that is food friendly and fruit forward. It's chock full of flavors of black cherry and raspberry, vanilla and toast, and has a nice long finish.
2014 Francis Coppola Cabernet Sauvignon, Director’s, Sonoma Co.
List price 19.99; Our price 11.99
The Coppola Winery is a park-like setting for the family to go, where there are things for kids to do, so they can be close to their parents who are sampling wines and foods. It was formally the Chateau Souverain Winery, now transformed into a wine wonderland, a park of pleasure where people of all ages can enjoy food, wine, music, dancing, games, swimming and performances of all type. This wine offers a ripe core of fruits that include blackberry, cherry and cassis as well as warm spice nuances. It is dark and succulent with medium density, a balanced palate and a nice integration of wood.
2014 Trig Point Cabernet Sauvignon, Alexander Valley
List price 24.00; Our price 21.50
Trig Point is produced by Nick Goldschmidt and his wife Yolyn. For many years he was the head-winemaker for the likes of Simi, Allied Domecq, and Beam Estates. In 1998, Nick decided to start a family company producing single vineyard, handcrafted, small production, artisan wines. This wine offers an impressive mix of red cherry, blackberry, and espresso notes fanning out to dried herb and tobacco leaf accents. The mid-palate is soft and expansive with roasted coffee and ripe blackberry flavors. It finishes with soft, supple tannins.
