Among the oldest wine grape plantings in California is Zinfandel. It found its way to the United States in the mid-19th century, most notably by Agoston Haraszthy, the "Father of California Viticulture” who created the Buena Vista Winery. He brought with him cuttings of Zinfandel (also known as Primitivo in Italy) which is known in Croatia as Crljenak. This black-skinned grape is grown in over 10 percent of California vineyards with a few still producing after 125 years. Four of our Zins this Saturday are from Lodi where most old vine vineyards in California still survive. One is from Mendocino and the last, a 20-year old Zinfandel from Sonoma.
2012 Old Zin Vines Zinfandel, Old Vine, Lodi
List price 13.00; Our price 10.99
The grapes for this wine are grown on the 50 to 100 year old vines in this Zin-central area. The bouquet and flavors are mindful of sweet cherries, blackberries and earthy spice. It is a jammy and robust wine all the way through to the long finish.
2013 Michael David Winery Zinfandel, Old Vine, Lodi
List price 14.00; Our price 11.99
This wine shows explosive, concentrated fruit in the mouth, with plenty of acidity to balance the ripeness, showing spice and blackberry on the finish. Robert Parker gave it a 90-point rating in the Wine Advocate: "A softer, more lush and voluptuous texture can be found in the 2013 7 Deadly Zins, which is also 100% Zinfandel from Lodi. The production here is 280,000 cases! To produce such a high-volume wine of this quality is pretty remarkable winemaking. Loads of ripeness, fruit, glycerin and medium to full-bodied silky mouth-feel make for a delicious effort."
2012 Klinker Brick Winery, Zinfandel, Old Vine, Lodi
list price 18.50; Our price 16.99
This is a great wine for fans of the flashy, very fruity, dark colored and fully oaked style of Zin. It shows a definite delectable mix of maple, boysenberries and vanilla. Full-bodied and concentrated, it’s firm in texture and slightly sweet on the finish.
2012 Oak Ridge Winery Moss Roxx Zinfandel, Acient Vines, Lodi
List price 24.00; Our price 19.99
This is a big flavorful Zinfandel from Lodi’s half to century year-old vines. It is dense and dark red wine with mature round tannins accenting generous cherry, raspberry, chocolate, caramel, and spice. The finish is long and smooth, truly an expression of Lodi’s signature terroir. This big, robust wine is best paired with bold flavors such as beef, lamb, venison, and barbequed pork ribs.
2013 Trinitas Cellars Zinfandel, Old Vine, Mendocino
List price 22.00; Our price 19.99
The nose reminds one of bright ripe cranberry notes, hints of forest, brown sugar, golden brown marshmallows, and cinnamon. This claret styled wine has a dominant presence right when it hits the front palate, which leads into a broad mid palate and enjoyable mouthwatering finish. The acidity perfectly balances out the bright fruit from the core and makes the wine perfect for food pairings or enjoying on its own.
1996 Haywood Estate Zinfandel, Los Chamizal V., Sonoma Valley
Our price 39.00
This vineyard was carved into a rugged valley, folded between the ridges of the Mayacamus Mountains. Upon release, Los Chamizal Zins show aromas of blackberry, cherry, spice and mocha. There are bold fruit hints of blackberry apparent in the well structured wine. Creamy oak flavors on the mid-palate lead to a long finish. But this wine is 20 years old and should prove instructive as to how well made Zin develops over time.
