We have new acquisitions in our Italian wine section and this Saturday would be an excellent time to show them off. The wines come from the far north of Italy and from the distant south. The price range is from 10.00 to 20.00 and the selection would perform well in any event. All six are different varietals, which in itself would provide for an interesting event.
Marsuret Prosecco, Extra Dry, Valdobbiadene, Veneto
List price 15.00; Our price 9.99
This DOCG Prosecco from the Valdobbiadene Area is made from the Glera grape using the Charmat Method. The wine has a straw yellow and displays a fine and persistent perlage. The bouquet is delicate, elegant and fruity with a strong fragrance of apple. In the mouth it is well-structured, elegant, aromatic and inviting; as an apéritif with friends at any time.
2016 Monchiero Carbone Arneis, Piemonte
List price 20.00; Our price 17.99
The Arneis grape variety originated in Roero, in Italy’s Piedmont wine region. Arneis wines are dry and perfumed, with low acidity and notes of apple, peach, almond and flowers. This bottling shows aromas of white spring flowers and yellow stone fruit leading the way on this easygoing but generous white. The round, juicy palate offers mature peach, ripe pear and a white almond note. Fresh acidity balances the creamy flavors.
2016 Pico Maccario “Lavignone” Barbera d’Asti, Piemonte
List price 17.00; Our price 14.99
This is a bright and aromatic Barbera with aromas and flavors of red cherries, violets and wild herbs. Soft tannins, a moderate level of alcohol and medium weight make Lavignone an ideal wine for a wide range of foods paired with many different dishes, such as roasted poultry and cheeses. The wine’s earthy flavors will nicely accent any dish containing herbs and mushrooms. It received a 90-point rating from Wine Spectator: “Graphite and spice aromas give way to blackberry, pomegranate and fruitcake flavors. A bit rustic now, but ends with a beam of pure blackberry. Drink now through 2022.”
2015 Bisceglia Aglianico del Vulture, “Terra di Vulcano”, Basilicata
List price 18.00; Our price 14.99
The nose senses aromas of blackberries and spices complementing undertones of forest floor and hints of smoke. On the palate, the wine is harmonious and balanced with soft, round tannins. Aglianico pairs well with pasta dishes with tomato sauce, pizzas, gazpacho, and age-ripened goat cheeses.
2015 Feudi del Pisciotto Nero d’Avola, Sicilia
List price 13.00; Our price 10.99
The nose has typical aromas of the varietal, such as black cherry, blackberry and plum. The wine has smooth tannins and nice red fruit flavors on the palate; ideal with pasta with tomato sauce, mushrooms and cheeses.
2012 Tenuta Valdipiatta Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, Toscana
List price 25.00; Our price 19.99
Earthy, truffle, new leather and berry scents mingle in the bouquet of this balanced and elegant wine. The palate is taut and austere, offering sour cherry, licorice and sage notes, framed by firm acidity and assertive, tight tannins that grip the finish. This is a blend of 85% Sangiovese (called Prugnolo Gentile in Montepulciano) and 15% Canaiolo. The wine is aged for six months in French barriques, followed by an additional 12 months in large Slavonian oak barrels. The wine then spends an additional 6 months in bottle for elegance and finesse.
