It is an accepted fact that Napa Valley Wineries make world class Cabernet, but other varietals tend to be overlooked. Chardonnay, too, has its areas in the valley producing superior fruit, and Merlot has enjoyed its time in the lime light. Less on the knowable scale are Sauvignon Blanc, Zinfandel and Red Blends. Many wineries, such as Caymus, Stags’ Leap, Beringer, Trinitas and Frank Family have elevated these varietals to high quality levels. These are the superlative wineries we are enjoying this Saturday.
2016 Caymus Emmolo Sauvignon Blanc
List price 24.00; Our price 19.99
The Wagner family prefers a Sauvignon Blanc that is more minerality-driven than fruit-driven. Not grassy or overly ripe, it features delicate fruit flavors and steely, mineral notes. The grapes come from two family vineyards, where the fruit is harvested at just the right moment to achieve a balance of firm acidity and low alcohol. It is an elegant and refined style of Sauvignon Blanc that is subtle and balanced, with minerality and bright natural acidity. On the nose, aromas of citrus, iron, wet stone and a hint of D'Anjou pear tempt your senses, while a crisp lightness and underlying notes of fleshy grapefruit and lime zest please the palate.
2016 Stags’ Leap Chardonnay
List price 25.00; Our price 19.99
The inviting bouquet expresses aromas of creamy lemon meringue, tropical pineapple, delicate elderflower and hints of raw almond nuttiness. On the palate, it is a classic refreshing Chardonnay with a vibrancy of tropical fruit notes that transition into lemon curd and meringue while also maintaining a roundness in texture that is balanced. With well-integrated vanilla oak notes, subtle almond undertones, and a flinty minerality on the finish, this wine is full, rich and bright, yet generous in style and maintains freshness due to its acidity, which creates a Chardonnay of lovely complexity and depth.
2015 Beringer Chardonnay, “Luminus”, Oak Knoll District
List price 35.00; Our price 29.95
The winemaking here is focused on showcasing the unique characteristics of Oak Knoll Chardonnay at the highest level. It received 93 points from Wine Enthusiast Magazine: “Heady oak aromas lead the nose of this silky, rich wine sourced from a cool site on the producer's own Big Ranch Vineyard at the southern end of the valley. Golden honey notes add to its luxurious nature, contrasting the linear infusion of tart lemon zest, orange peel and nutty spice flavors”. Wine Spectator awards it 91 points: “Pure, crisp and zesty, with a lively mix of green apple, pear, honeydew and citrus flavors. Light toasty oak joins in on the finish.”
2015 Stags’ Leap Merlot
List price 30.00; Our price 24.99
This expressive Merlot showcases the varietal’s ability to excel in Napa Valley with its generous, juicy fruit flavors, intriguing baking spice notes and polished structure. It is pleasurable and complex with cherry, cranberry, pomegranate, and plum with notes of caramel and cinnamon that persist through the long finish. The wine has depth and nuance with smooth tannins and a lush, lovely texture.
2014 Trinitas Mysteriama Red Wine Blend
List price 25.00; Our price 21.99
91 points from Wine Enthusiast: “Sunny berry aromas give way to focused black cherry and dark-chocolate flavors that ride a richly tannic texture in this full-bodied wine. Made from a blend based on Zinfandel, Carignane and Petite Sirah grapes, it delivers ample complexity and depth.”
2015 Frank Family Vineyards Zinfandel
List price 37.00; Our price 33.95
The newly released Napa Valley Zinfandel is garnet in color, and opens with aromas of raspberries, vanilla, and earthy dried herbs. Medium-bodied on the palate with an abundance of fresh fruit and black pepper flavors on the entry, this wine is round, silky, and finishes with flavors of ripe blackberries.
