Founded in 1981 by Dennis Patton, Hidden Cellars made some of the best Zinfandel and Petite Sirah in Mendocino County. It was sold in 1999 to Parducci Wine Cellars, a much larger wine producer. Mendocino is California's most northerly major wine region, about 100 miles from San Francisco. It is best known for its Zinfandel, Petite Sirah, Carignan and Syrah, from some of the oldest vineyards in the state. The 7 wines we will taste Saturday are from 1995 and 1997 and were made by Patton. Most of the wines to be opened are our very last bottles, which for us becomes “the end of an era”. The wines were well cared for, but only by opening each of them will we know their survival rate.
1995 Hidden Cellars Syrah, Mendocino
The grapes for this wine were grown on steep southwest facing hills along the Russian River Valley. The resultant wine of the mountain vineyards and the new French oak used in ageing should prove interesting now.
1997 Hidden Cellars Syrah, Mendocino
This wine was produced in the same manner as the proceeding wine but from yet another great ‘90’s vintage.
1997 Hidden Cellars Syrah, Eaglepoint Ranch
The grapes for this Syrah come from one of Mendocino’s best vineyards 1700 feet in elevation in the Mayacamas Mountains
1995 Hidden Cellars Zinfandel, Hildreth Ranch
The Hildreth family has been farming in the county since the late 1850’s.
1995 Hidden Cellars Zinfandel, Ford Vineyard & Hitzman Vineyard
This wine is the work of two dedicated viticulturists whose fruit was vinified by Mr. Patton into opulent Zinfandels.
1997 Hidden Cellars Zinfandel, Pacini Vineyard
One of the oldest vineyards in the state, the Pacini vineyard is head pruned and dry farmed. It epitomizes old vine agriculture producing fruit of intense flavor and concentration.
1997 Hidden Cellars Sorcery, Mendocino
This is a blend from old vine vineyards and comprises Zinfandel (75%), Petite Sirah (25%) and Syrah (10%).
