Hanzell Vineyards is a California wine producer located just outside the town of Sonoma. The Hanzell winery was founded by the late Ambassador James David Zellerbach who acquired 200 acres in the Mayacamas Mountains in 1943 and began planting Pinot Noir and Chardonnay in 1953. At the time, the entire state of California had fewer than 200 acres planted to Chardonnay; image that! He pioneered several winemaking techniques such as the use of barrel-aging, malolactic fermentation, and the use of inert gases and anaerobic winemaking. Hanzell winemaking sought to produce Burgundian style wines but was quick to adopt modern winemaking techniques. These are wines of elegance that make a statement; other wineries have attempted varietal replication by planting in their vineyards what has become know as the “Hanzell Clone”. Interestingly, since 1953 there have been only 4 winemakers, and it is Michael McNeill currently who took charge in 2003. Joining us from the winery this Saturday is Kelly Thorn Hiebert who will discuss and pour the wines.
2016 Hanzell Chardonnay, “Sebella”, Sonoma County
List price 25.00; Our price 19.99
Hanzell utilizes young estate vine parcels for their Sebella bottling which will someday be included in their flagship Chardonnay. The style of this bottling celebrates the purity and focus of youthful fruit. The precise profile is allowed to shine by virtue of its vinification and barrel-aging in French oak, but without new wood or malolactic fermentation. As a second wine, Sebella is far from simple and its virtue shows most clearly on the persistence of finish which out-classes much more fleshy and obvious Chardonnay bottlings on the market. The wine shows floral aromas of orange blossom and honeysuckle complementing the pear, golden delicious apple, white peach, kumquat and pink grapefruit fruit aromas. The flavors on the palate echo the nose, with the addition of lemon zest, wet graphite and a slight tropical note. The entry on the palate is broad and rich, balanced by bright acidity.

List price 69.00; Our price 59.00
Engaging aromas of lemon verbena, honeysuckle, pear and a hint of hazelnut are carried by the bright citrus notes of pink grapefruit, lime and Meyer lemon. With a creamy, yet light texture, flavors of tangerine, pink grapefruit, golden delicious apple, pear, thyme and a saline character linger on the palate through a long and bright finish.
2015 Hanzell Pinot Noir, “Sebella”, Sonoma County
List price 40.00; Our price 29.99
Juicy red fruit aromas of raspberry, pomegranate and Bing cherry are enhanced by notes of orange peel, clove and sassafras. The sweet concentrated fruit on the palate is penetrating and carries through to a long finish. Nicely balanced acidity and plenty of fine tannin support the lovely fruit and provide texture and structure. Great to drink now, the Sebella has the structure for cellaring if you are so inclined. Decant for an hour.
2013 Hanzell Pinot Noir, Sonoma Valley
List price 100.00; Our price 95.00
There is a sweet-savory quality to the aromas with the black cherry fruit being complemented by scents of juniper berries, and orange peel. The flavors are darker and riper with flavors of blueberry, plum and cocoa as well as brandied cherries. Ample mouth-coating tannins have a gentle, velvety quality, but leave no doubt that this will be a very long- lived wine. It ends with exotic spice, complex berry and a mineral aftertaste.
