Frog's Leap Winery is a Rutherford, Napa Valley wine producer that was founded in 1981 on a spot along Mills Creek known as Frog Farm. It was established and named by John Williams and Larry Turley by combining "Frog Farm" (where its first wines were made) with "Stag's Leap" (where John Williams had his first winemaking job). Turley was a doctor and Williams was a winemaker at Spring Mountain Vineyard. They took the winery into organic farming, and made it the first Napa winery with certified organically grown grapes. In 1994, John took Frog's Leap to the Red Barn Ranch in Rutherford, and Larry Turley established what is now Turley Wine Cellars. Interestingly, in 2005, the winery installed a photo-voltaic system that now produces 260,000 kilowatt-hours of energy saving the winery 85% of its usage, and of its former $50,000 annual electric bill. This famous winery always places a wine on the top selling restaurant lists of America.
2016 Frog’s Leap Sauvignon Blanc
List price 25.00; our price 22.99
The beautiful aromatics of peach blossom and white flower give way to a very light slate aroma that gives way to crisp mineral flavors. This wine spent a bit more time on its fermentation lees than is usual and is richer and more unctuous than most recent releases. Look for lime citrus, passion fruit and hints of toast from the extended aging on the lees. There are a wide variety of culinary options, but it pairs particularly well with some fresh, briny oysters or with rich fish. It received a 92-point rating from Wine Spectator Magazine.
2015 Frog’s Leap Chardonnay
List price 32.00; our price 28.99
This vintage picks up on the best aspects of Carneros fruit: fog cooled tart lemon and grapefruit flavors that are bright in the mouth and lead to a rich finish hinting of caramel notes and a touch of brininess. The brisk acidity makes this an excellent food wine which explains its popularity on restaurant wine lists.
2014 Frog’s Leap Merlot
List price 40.00; our price 36.00
This wine starts off with ripe plum aromas that convey deep weight on the palate. There are black fruits and a hint of blueberry along with mocha, spice and a leathery character. This is Merlot perfection with big body and balanced tannins extending to a long finish. There is a small portion of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc in the blend to add to the complexity. The structure of this wine with its fine sense of balance gives promise for aging well into the future.
2015 Frog’s Leap Zinfandel
List price 32.00; our price 28.99
This Zin gives us aromas of jammy berries combined with a touch of spice and other fresh fruit flavors. This wine is typical of the sophisticated style one expects from Napa instead of high alcohol content. It is made in the classic field blend style including significant portions of Petite Sirah and Carignan. It picked up a 92-point rating from Wine & Spirits Magazine.
2014 Frog’s Leap Cabernet Sauvignon
List price 55.00; our price 49.99
Wine & Spirits gave this a 90-point rating: “John Williams dry farms this cabernet, and it shows the drought year in its chunky blackness, settling into an underground root-zone cool as it opens with air. It offers a sense of restraint and satin-textured smoothness, a wine that needs bottle age to develop its flavor detail.”
This Cab is classic in the way it shows intense aromas of dark fruits, blackberry and cassis with lovely overtones of mocha and coffee bean. The flavors are subtle, nuanced, deep and precisely balanced. It is a wine meant to be cellared but can be thoroughly enjoyed now with any cut of meat.
