Kermit Lynch was raised in San Luis Obispo, but his name has become synonymous with French and Italian wines. In 1972, with a $5,000 loan he opened Kermit Lynch Wine Merchant with thirty-five cases of wine stacked on the floor. Attracted by the Old World wine cultures of Europe, Kermit became a retailer, distributor, and national importer for authentic wines that express their terroir. He has had so much success shining the spotlight on small, artisan producers that he has won two James Beard awards and was knighted by the French government with their prestigious “Legion d’Honneur.”
2015 Domaine Michel Brégeon Muscadet Sèvre-et-Maine
List price 20.00; Our price 17.99
Though Muscadet (made from the Melon de Bourgogne grape) has been commonly known to produce young, fresh wines, (like this one that spends a few months sur lie), Michel has broken the mold, keeping some of his wines on the lees for as much as seven years! This wine is bone dry and flinty with mouthwatering acidity. It has a bouquet of lemon and wet stones. The slightly bitter finish makes your mouth water; pair it with oysters.
2015 Champalou Vouvray, Loire
List price 20.00; Our price 17.99
Vouvray is home to the noble Chenin Blanc, more commonly known as Pineau de la Loire in their part of the world. As widespread as Pineau is, both soil and climate play key roles in the diversity of its incarnations, and a Chenin from California gives one no hint of what the grape is capable of in the right soil. Farther inland along the Loire, in the region of the Touraine, Vouvray enjoys a warm, continental climate during the summers. The Champalou house style shows great elegance and tenderness and is highly aromatic with impeccable balance. The freshness and delicate aromas of the wine make it a perfect partner with grilled fish and white meats, shell-fish, roasted vegetables and oriental food. This is also a first-rate apéritif wine.
Champalou Sparkling Vouvray, Loire
List price 23.00; Our price 18.99
This pétillant wine is floral on the nose, dry and clean as a whistle on the palate. It is a 100% Chenin Blanc sparkler, less austere and less effervescent than Champagne, but every bit as fun to drink and versatile with food. There are subdued aromas of orange zest, lemon, dried pear and honeysuckle. Broad but energetic citrus and orchard fruit flavors are complemented by anise and honey, giving the wine an impression of richness as well as vivacity. The persistent finish repeats the honey and floral notes and clings nicely. This is weighty enough to handle richer fish dishes.
2015 Savoie Mont Blanc Gamay, Chignin
List price 20.00; Our price 18.50
The 30 year old vines that make up this lovely wine are located in the Savoie region of Chignin, an idyllic region hugging the western Alps. This fresh, pure mountain red can be served lightly chilled to experience the soaring aromatics, tart berry fruit, and a lovely finish highlighted by brisk acidity and stony minerals.
2015 Château Thivin Brouilly, Reverdon, Côte de Brouilly
List price 25.00; Our price 22.50
Château Thivin is the benchmark Domaine of the Côte de Brouilly; everything about it is exceptional. Built in the fifteenth century on an ancient volcano which juts out steeply into the valley below, Thivin is the oldest estate on Mont Brouilly. Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate gave it a 92-point rating: "The 2015 Brouilly Reverdon has a powerful but primal bouquet, clearly laden with plenty of fruit. The definition is here though. The palate is fleshy and supple on the entry but then those tannins cloak the mouth, without overwhelming, finishing in quite a sensual style. This is a knockout Brouilly."
2015 Domaine de Fontsainte, Corbières
List price 16.00; Our price 13.50
This blend of 60% Carignan, 30% Grenache Noir and 10% Syrah has an enticing, distinctive nose driven by jammy black fruits with spice, pepper and olive paste. It has a silky mouth-feel enveloping the fruit, and power framed by freshness. Try this racy, elegant Corbières with herb-flavored grilled meats.
