There seems to be no end of good wines coming out of Napa Valley and that should be no surprise. This world class wine growing region never ceases to amaze regardless of what it produces. Of course, many of the finest Cabernets come from this Mecca of production, but this Saturday we will taste other varietals. The reds should be of particular interest as all are Merlot, and the last of these is a 25 year old Merlot from Robert Mondavi Winery. Older wines are not for everyone as most people are accustomed to fresh wines from the current vintage. Yet there is the curious minority who relish the opportunity to experience how the wine ages.
2014 Trefethen Dry Riesling, Oak Knoll District
List price 22.00; Our price 18.99
The Trefethen family makes great reds as you will see with their Merlot, but their Riesling is a pleasure as well. It is picked in several stages, to preserve both the crisp, citrusy acidity, and the rich, tropical fruit flavors that it is capable of producing. While in the bottle, it develops characteristic notes of mineral oil (also termed “petrol”) along with golden pear, lemon and grapefruit. It received 90-points from Wine Enthusiast Magazine.
2014 Napa Cellars Chardonnay, Napa Valley
List price 13.50; Our price 9.99
Aromas of vanilla, caramel, honey melon and hints of baked apple crisp are your introduction to this wine. Meyer lemon combined with toasted coconut, pear, apple, pineapple and a hint of marshmallow play on the palate. The wine has soft, balanced acidity and a creamy finish
2012 Cairdean Vineyards Chardonnay, Napa Valley
List price 20.00; Our price 14.99
This rich, balanced wine shows aromatics of stone fruit, apple and lychee with toasty oak notes of caramel, vanilla with hints of smoke. On the palate, this wine is well-balanced and medium-bodied with bright acidity and has a smooth buttery finish. The wine was aged sur-lie with regular batonnage to further increase the richness on the palate.
2014 Raymond Vineyard Merlot, R Collection, Lot #2
List price 14.00; Our price 10.99
The Lot #2 Merlot fills the mouth with smooth cherry, raspberry and plum flavors along with hints of earth and spice in the toasty vanilla finish. It is full-bodied, yet approachable, with a good balance of acid and tannins.
2012 Trefethen Merlot, Oak Knoll District
List price 35.00; Our price 29.99
On the nose, floral notes of crushed violet lead the way to dark fruit aromas of black cherries, ripe plum and blackberries. On the palate, the wine is well structured and balanced, offering flavors of blackberry and plum, with a hint of dark chocolate and fine leather. The mouth-feel is full and rich, with velvety soft tannins that continue through the wine’s long-lasting finish.
1991 Robert Mondavi Merlot, Napa Valley
Our price 49.00
When released in 1993, this wine showed wonderfully concentrated cassis, black plum, dried herb, violet floral and dusty cinnamon aromas and flavor with an intriguing savory note on the long, velvety finish. After 25 years one would expect the flowers and fruit properties to slip away leaving plumy, herbal, leather & earth character.
