The Mara Wine Group is a company founded by Charles and Helen Mara, in an effort to better facilitate the production and marketing of their handcrafted artisan wines and also wines produced by their closest friends from within the wine industry. Charles is a nationally recognized wine judge, winery owner and wine merchant, and we are very fortunate to have him join us here this Saturday. He will be able to answer most any question you may have about the wine industry, and, best of all, he will sample you on his wines.
2013 Mara Sauvignon Blanc “White Grass”, Dry Creek Valley
List price 22.00; Our price 17.99
Of the 4 vineyards that are used to make this elegantly structured Sauvignon Blanc, 3 are from the dry creek valley and 1 is from the Russian River Valley; certainly 2 of the best areas for growing this wonderful varietal. The grapes were hand picked, whole cluster, pressed and settled over night. The wine enjoyed a long cold fermentation in stainless steel, never exceeding 64 degrees to keep all the characteristics of the grape. The aromas are of tropical fruits, candied apples, pears, green apples, melons and gooseberries. It has great acidity to compliment any food you serve and is not lacking a full body mouth feel.
2014 Mara Sauvignon Blanc “White Grass”, Lake County
List price 22.00; Our price 17.99
The Mara 2014 from Lake County from the "Clear Lake" AVA is a lovely wine. The upper lake growing region lies along the northwest shore of the largest natural freshwater lake in California. The breezes over the soils and the lake contribute ultimately to the aromas of fresh crisp green apples and melons. The well balanced acidity brings out the citrus flavors of lemongrass, peach and melon. The wine is extremely versatile for many culinary uses or for sipping by itself.
2009 Mara Pinot Noir, Laughlin Road Ranch, Russian River
List price 59.00; Our price 47.00
The grapes were picked in the early morning Fog; then whole berry cold soaked for 4 days. When the juice warmed up it started fermenting on its own. The fruit was pressed and allowed to finish fermenting in barrels.
What turned out was a Burgundian style of complex hints of fresh mushrooms, black raspberries and cherries and a forest earthiness. The mouth feel is dense and rich with and excellent balance of all the flavors mentioned. This special wine is hand crafted, unfined, unfiltered and limited.
2014 Mara Field Blend Red Wine, Sonoma County
List price 25.00; Our price 22.50
This wine is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (45%), Merlot (20%), Petit Verdot (20%) and Malbec (15%) from some of the Best Sonoma County Vineyards. It is predominantly from vineyards and fields of Dry Creek Valley and Alexander Valley. After noting the very dark color, there are nice berry and spice aromas with hints of vanilla and cherry. The wonderful touch of smoke and earth along with a good feel of tannins coming from the Bordeaux varietals linger nicely in the long finish.
2007 Mara Zinfandel, Old Vine, Russian River Valley
List price 42.00; Our price 36.00
This is an amazing wine with great body from an amazing vintage. The aromas and bouquets are of stone cherries and raspberries with hints of vanilla. Because of the richness in the mouth, the wine is soft and smooth. (Extra time in barrels makes that happen). The flavor that comes out in the taste also brings to mind stone cherries and raspberries, evolving with cloves, cinnamon and caramel and many more facets of flavors.
