In 2013, the Cakebread family celebrated its 40 anniversary of production of some of the finest wines to emerge from Napa Valley. Being farsighted vineyardists Jack and Delores Cakebread continued buying vineyards and parcels, not only in Napa Valley but in the Anderson Valley where they planted Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. A number of varietal wines besides those we are sampling today are produced at their winery, but are sold there only. For instance, the Rosé is as good as it gets from California. Jack and Delores are very hospitable and spending time with them can truly be a joy. Their sons have now assumed the reins of command and are continuing the good work. Joining us is Tyler Worth who will be pouring and discussing the wines. We begin the event with Shramsberg’s Blanc de Blancs sparkling wine, Methode Champenoise, because Cakebread doesn’t make one and we love it.

Delicious now, this youthful merlot will benefit from another 5-7 years’ aging, then pair it with pork, pheasant or veal.
2012 Cakebread Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley
List price 79.00; Our price 69.99
This Cab received 90 points from Robert Parker's Wine Advocate and 92 points from James Suckling:
A classic, the 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon offers plenty of crème de cassis and spring flower characteristics as well as beautiful density, sweet tannin and good underlying structure as well as definition. Aged 18 months in French oak, it is a beautiful example of Napa Cabernet Sauvignon that can be drunk young, but will be even better in 3-4 years. It should age effortlessly for 12-15 years.
