Join us this Saturday for a sampling of new arrivals featuring some excellent values. These quality wines provide an excellent opportunity to proudly serve to friends and family truly tasty delights. In fact, two of the wines are supportive of the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation. They are made by Marines, for Marines, and are now being offered to the public. Beyond the opportunity to serve fine wines at excellent prices, there is the enjoyment of them by oneself.
2008 BOGLE VINEYARDS CHARDONNAY, CALIFORNIA
List price 9.99; our price 8.99
Here is a hand-crafted wine that has a little bit of something for everyone: barrel fermentation, sur-lies aging and partial malolactic fermentation. These careful processes create a wine with layers of complexity and generous character. Distinctively Chardonnay from the Clarksburg appellation, the aromatics shine of Bartlett pear and saucy apple. Mid palate, the texture shows off its silky, soft nature, allowing the creamy notes to envelop the fruit. New American oak adds nutmeg, vanilla and a hint of butterscotch to the finish, though never losing its perfectly balanced acidity.
2008 TOAD HOLLOW DRY PINOT NOIR ROSÉ, EYE OF THE TOAD, SONOMA
List price 11.00; our price 8.99
Now in their eleventh vintage of Pinot Noir Rosé, Toad Hollow continues to produce true French-Style, bone dry, and elegant rosé wine from the noble Pinot Noir grape (they say this is their best to date). The wine has good body and weight for a rosé of Pinot Noir. The color is a beautiful pink and the nose is of rose petals and violets. It is very important to keep all sources of sugar out of rosé and allow the classic grapes to speak for themselves. Note how spice and pepper bring out the wonderful wild strawberry flavors.
2007 BOGLE VINEYARDS PETITE SIRAH, CALIFORNIA
List price 9.99; our price 8.99
Thirty-one years after it was first produced by the Bogle family in 1978, Petite Sirah is today considered their “heritage” varietal. Ripe blackberries and plums overwhelm both the nose and palate of this wine. Its trademark inky, jammy qualities are a barrage of black fruit and spice, adding layer upon layer of complexity. Notes of supple leather and toasty oak envelop the flavors through the finish, giving way to wisps of caramel and vanilla. The firm tannins make this a wine that can develop for years to come, if you can stay away from your supply.
JARHEAD RED, RED TABLE WINE, CALIFORNIA
List price 10.95; our price 8.99
Jarhead Red is made by Marines, for Marines at the Firestone Winery. The net proceeds from the sale of this wine benefit the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation that provides educational assistance to the children of fallen Marines. This Cabernet, blended with some Merlot, has a rich bouquet. Its flavors of plum and black current are firm, straight-forward, and long-lasting. It is aged in French oak barrels for eight months and offers fine tannins on the finish.
2006 JARHEAD RED RESERVE, SANTA YNEZ VALLEY
List price 19.95; our price 14.99
Jarhead Red started in 1999 from grapes grown in the valleys of Santa Ynez. This ’06 artful blend of Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Malbec is smooth and elegant, with layers of cassis, plum, mint and licorice. This wine will age gracefully for the next six to eight years.
2007 CARMENET CABERNET SAUVIGNON, CALIFORNIA
List price 12.00; our price 9.99
Two weeks ago we introduced the Carmenet Pinot Noir which was a big hit at this price. Now try the Cab which has a complex bouquet of berries with hints of chocolate. The palate rounds out with spice and vanilla and ends with round tannins and a smooth lingering finish.
