In past weeks we have been concentrating on red wines from around the world and thought that this Saturday we should give fans of the white grape an opportunity to experience some of the latest from Napa Valley. Some great whites come from this Mecca of wine production. Since the 1850’s, the land under cultivation has grown to 43,000 acres of vineyards and the number of wineries has passed the 300 mark. Three great scourges, Phylloxera, Prohibition and the Great Depression, had set Napa Valley back considerably, but look at it now. Very few valleys are as beautiful and the wines are a joyful indulgence.
2012 Napa Cellars Sauvignon Blanc
LIST PRICE 15.00; OUR PRICE 12.99
This wine has vibrant aromas of gooseberry, pineapple and fresh pink grapefruit. The 100% stainless steel fermentation allows this wine to retain the fresh fruit flavors of pear, guava, passion fruit and citrus lime tones. The wine has a lush mouthfeel with notes of sweet clover and melon. The balanced acidity on the finish offers a fresh, crisp end to this wine – perfect to compliment many foods or to sip alone on a warm day.
2011 St. Supéry Sauvignon Blanc
LIST PRICE 19.95; OUR PRICE 16.99
The 2011 provides generous grapefruit aromas coupled with green lime, kiwi and a subtle zest of caper. Flavors are rich with grapefruit, guava and a lemon zest citrus combination. The wine is rich, vibrant and generous, yet elegant with a terrific crisp finish.
2011 J. Lohr Sauvignon Blanc, Carol’s Vineyard
LIST PRICE 19.00; OUR PRICE 17.50
In the Napa Valley, the 2011 vintage was one of the coolest growing seasons of the last two decades. Heavy winter rainfall and a very cold winter delayed budbreak to early April. Fortunately, Sauvignon Blanc (which is the first Bordeaux variety to ripen) greatly benefited from the unusually cool weather, which enhanced the fresh passion fruit and herbaceous varietal characters. This wine displays complex aromas of ruby grapefruit, passion fruit, gooseberry, dried flowers and faint herbaceous freshness. On the palate, the wine provides an excellent balance of bright, racy acidity and fresh fruit flavors reminiscent of the aromas.
2011 Caymus Conundrum
LIST PRICE 20.00; OUR PRICE 17.99
While the exact blend remains a secret, this vintage delivers an exotic, food-friendly white wine that is neither too rich nor too light, with just the right balance of extract, acidity, and spice. It consists of both popular and esoteric white grapes, including Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon, Viognier, and Muscat Canelli. The various lots are fermented separately so the optimal blend can be determined when the wine is ready to be bottled. Some lots are aged in stainless steel while others are aged in a combination of new and used French oak barrels.
2010 Napa Cellars Chardonnay
LIST PRICE 17.00; OUR PRICE 14.50
The fruit for this Chardonnay was sourced from select vineyards in prime Chardonnay locations in South Napa and the Carneros. The cool weather influences in the southern part of the valley enabled an extended growing season. The resulting wine has wonderful, bright fruit flavors and crisp acidity.
2011 Heitz Cellar Chardonnay
LIST PRICE 23.00; OUR PRICE 21.00
The cool 2011 vintage comes through this release of Heitz Cellar Chardonnay, which is wonderfully vibrant and fresh. Juicy notes of pear, melon and citrus are delivered on a creamy palate with a kiss of minerality and subtle oak influence. It’s a delicious wine delivering tiers of citrus flavor and the slight tanginess of green apple wrapped around a creamy center. It is well-balanced with clean acidity and a lightly toasted character, and offers up a long, graceful finish.
