One of our favorite subjects here is Zinfandel. We frequent this varietal because it is delicious, fun, relatively inexpensive and wildly variable. Pinot Noir fans will not be impressed at this event for there is no subtlety here. Zins are rambunctious and challenging, fruity and sometimes with an edge of sweetness. Then some are done in the “claret” style which can rise to the level of greatness of our majestic Cabs, usually at half the price. In any event, they are never boring. Even more interesting, we will sample 3 wines that are at least 6 vintages old, to get a feel for how Sonoma Zins can age.
2011 Pedroncelli Zinfandel, Mother Clone, Dry Creek Valley
LIST PRICE 16.00; OUR PRICE 13.99
The Mother Clone is a classic Dry Creek Valley Zinfandel. Aromas of raspberry and allspice lead to Bing cherry and strawberry flavors framed by subtle black pepper spice. Well integrated flavors with well balanced acidity and warm toasty oak are a hallmark of the Pedroncelli style. Enjoy now or cellar for three to five years.
2010 Murphy-Goode Zinfandel, Liar’s Dice, Sonoma Co.
LIST PRICE 20.00; OUR PRICE 17.99
This wine is from Dry Creek and Alexander Valley AVAs. It reveals deep aromas and luscious flavors of black cherry, blackberry jam, black raspberry and currants. It is a fruity, spicy Zin that is medium-bodied; complementing food with dry, classically varietal flavors of wild berries, brambly herbs, white pepper and sandalwood.
2012 Seghesio Zinfandel, Angela’s Table, Sonoma
LIST PRICE 19.00; OUR PRICE 16.99
Every year, approximately 35 lots of Zinfandel averaging 25-30 years in age are brought in to make this wine. Each of these lots is produced under the careful eye of winemaker, Ted Seghesio. The best of these lots are selected to make Sonoma Zinfandel, into which a small amount of Petite Sirah is blended for added complexity. The result is a tantalizing black raspberry and classic briary flavored wine with a balance of components for which Seghesio wines are known.
2008 Frostwatch Zinfandel, Bennett Valley
LIST PRICE 23.95; OUR PRICE 19.99
The wine opens with aromas of bright red and black fruits including cherry and plum coupled with light notes of chocolate and toast. It is rich and chewy with good mid-palate density. While it flirts with high ripeness, the wine avoids going over the top by maintaining balance and length.
2008 Dancing Lady Zinfandel, Old Vine, Alexander Valley
LIST PRICE 25.00; OUR PRICE 22.75
The Della Costa family literally set down roots for their Zinfandel vines and clones over a hundred years ago. The wine is ripe and a bit untamed, but appealing for its youthful burst of fruit. It offers aromas of baked cherry and toasty herbs, with flavors of cassis and spicy oak. Only 358 cases were made.
