Lodi is known primarily for its Zinfandels, but it does well with other varietals as well. We’re pulling from our inventory an interesting cross section of red varietals to illustrate the point.
2012 Noble Vines Merlot, “181”, Lodi
LIST PRICE 14.00; OUR PRICE 9.99
The “181” is classic Bordeaux-style Merlot, elegantly opening with aromas of cherry, blackberry and sweet herbs. Fresh fruit flavors of black cherry and ripe plum fuse seamlessly with hints of spice leading to a lingering and luxurious finish.
2013 OZV Red Blend, California
LIST PRICE 13.00; OUR PRICE 10.99
This red is Zinfandel based and has a unique blend of rich concentrations and aromas of blackberry, vanilla and toasted oak. Soft tannins lead to full sensation in the mouth-feel and on the palate.
2013 Michael-David Syrah “6th Sense”, Lodi
LIST PRICE 15.00; OUR PRICE 11.99
From a black grape that makes red wine, the 6th Sense remains a huge player in the Michael David lineup. Super-saturated, big and juicy, it makes a bright, tangy impact. Full of flavor in the same deep-red tones as the aromas, tannins are tame. The mid-palate offers plum and blackberry, with a touch of mulberry.
2012 Michael-David Cabernet Sauvignon “Freakshow”, Lodi
LIST PRICE 20.00; OUR PRICE 15.99
Heavy aromas and flavors of oak and smoke accompany ripe black cherry and boysenberry for a rich mixture. This wine is deeply colored, full bodied and pumped up with the flavors of heavily toasted oak. A firm but not harsh texture accompanies the almost sweet taste of all that oak. Robert Parker rated it 90-points.
2013 Michael-David Petitt Petit, Lodi
LIST PRICE 18.00; OUR PRICE 14.99
90 points from Robert Parker: “Another consistent success from this Lodi producer is the 2013 Petite Petit, a blend of 85% Petite Sirah and 15% Petit Verdot. They make 80,000 cases of this wine, which probably takes much of the production of Petite Sirah out of the Lodi AVA. An outstanding wine with gorgeous aromatics of incense, blueberry liqueur, camphor and blackberry, the wine hits the palate with a full-bodied, thunderous inky feel to it, great fruit purity, amazingly supple, velvety tannins for Petite Sirah and Petit Verdot, and a long finish. This is another wine that over-delivers in a big way.”
2012 Klinker Brick Zinfandel Old Vine, Lodi
LIST PRICE 18.50; OUR PRICE 16.99
Produced from vines with an average age of 85 years, this delicious wine exhibits a bright bouquet of wild strawberry and Satsuma plum, intermingled with cedar shavings. Filling the palate with flavors of black cherry and vanilla, supple tannins support good structure. The finish is smooth and long.
