Contrary to many opinions I hear today, there are many good Pinot Noirs to be had in the under $20.00 category. This is an opportunity for lovers of the grape to reevaluate their concept of what joy lies at this end of the spectrum. It is equally an opportunity for those who say they do not like Pinot Noir to reassert their hatred for the grape, or make an otherwise pleasant discovery. You don’t know what is out there until you step up to our Saturday events and taste each of the bottles offered. Can you think of a better way to end the day and begin the evening?
Jean-Charles Boisset Rosé Sparkling Wine, No. 69, Burgundy
List price 20.00; our price 15.99
Jean-Charles was born in 1969, which probably has something to do with the No. 69 designation. J-C adds that “1969 was the year that mankind went to the moon. As such, 69 represents unlimited expression, freedom, creativity, intellectual revolution, artistry, and refinement. Of course, 69 is also a rosé brut based exclusively on pinot noir; a rosé that entwines masculinity and femininity.” More to the point, this rosé is made in the saignée method by carrying out a short maceration of Pinot Noir from Burgundy’s Côtes. The wine shows vibrant aromas and flavors of raspberry and red currant that evolve into aromatic jammy notes. Its crisp flavors allow for pairing with quiches, frittatas, shell fish and salmon.
2010 Iron Horse Rosé de Pinot Noir, Green Valley, Sonoma

The Rosé de Pinot Noir is a perfectly lovely rose petal pink in the glass made from the highest caliber estate grown, cool climate Pinot Noir. Because of the high quality Pinot Noir grown in its vineyard, Iron Horse has consistently produced some of the best rosés from California. This floral cherry flavored wine will pair with anything with heat (as in spicy) such as beef chili and barbeque. Or simply enjoy it as an apéritif on a beautiful summer day, outside, with some olives.
2010 Leese-Fitch Pinot Noir, California
List price 12.00; our price 9.99
This is our best selling Pinot Noir in the store and you will see why when you have a taste. If you already know the wine, here is an excellent opportunity to see how it stacks up against other brands. The flavors are reminiscent of dark plum, raspberry, tobacco leaf, cocoa nibs, and rhubarb finishing with a hint of earthy loam, black cherry, and toffee. The crisp acidity provides a fine balance.
2010 HandCraft Pinot Noir, California
List price 12.00; our price 9.99
Gorgeous cherry, vanilla and strawberry aromas are followed by ripe black cherry, sweet spice, vanilla and chocolate flavors. This medium bodied wine is elegant, supple, smooth and balanced; delicious by itself or perfect with food. The finish is soft and lingering with a perfect integration of structure, fruit and spice.
2010 Brassfield Pinot Noir, High Serenity Ranch, Clearlake
List price 16.00; our price 12.99
The 2010 vintage marks the debut of David Ramey as Brassfield’s winemaker. Ramey’s wines of balanced expression have made him one of the most renowned and influential winemakers in America today. This wine shows bright aromatics of black cherry cola leading to ripe pomegranate and a rich, creamy sensation on the palate. True to what a quintessential Pinot Noir should taste like, the wine’s ripe, bright character contributes to a long, rewarding finish. The wine was bottled unfiltered to preserve its freshness and naturally delicious character. Winemaker David Ramey summarizes, “the 2010 is riper and brighter than its predecessor and a dead-ringer for an Anderson Valley Pinot Noir at twice the price!”
