We have made lots of new purchases to add to our eclectic collection and this week we are featuring those wines hailing from Sonoma County. This large county is fast becoming a giant vineyard, to the extent that environmental groups are trying to stop the “vineyard creep” and save the oak trees. So what is your choice, wine grapes or acorns? In the meantime, here is a representation of some of the wonderful values that abound around and about the county.
2013 Carmenet Cardonnay, Sonoma
LIST PRICE 10.00; OUR PRICE 7.99
Carmenet Chardonnay is a lovely straw-colored wine with hints of apple, banana, and vanilla. This tasty little number shows off its butterscotch and tropical fruit and ends with a smooth, crisp, enjoyable finish.
2012 Chloe Chardonnay, Sonoma
LIST PRICE 15.00; OUR PRICE 11.99
This wine is crafted from grapes grown primarily in Sonoma’s Russian River Valley. Chloe winemaker Georgetta Dane has highlighted the structure and depth of this fruit by using new and used oak as a secondary presence, rather than the focus, to showcase ripe, clean flavors of fresh citrus, apple and pear with notes of creamy butter and a hint of vanilla. The resulting wine is very well-balanced, shows a creamy mid-palate and has a long finish.
2012 Olema Chardonnay, Sonoma
LIST PRICE 14.00; OUR PRICE 12.75
This easily likable Chardonnay from Olema was fermented half in oak and half in stainless steel, giving the wine a crisp and refreshing acidity. Apple and citrus notes balance the wine and bring a creamy quality to the finish.
2011 Rosenblum Petite Sirah, Sonoma
LIST PRICE 15.00; OUR PRICE 9.99
This wine exhibits great color with a bouquet and flavors of ripe blackberries, plums, chocolate, black pepper, violets and spice. Rosenblum has long been well known for its Petite Sirahs. This wine is amazing both in aromatics and flavors. Here is the perfect wine for hearty fare such as mixed sausage ragu, barbecue smoked prime rib, leg of lamb on a bed of thyme, or a good old-fashioned pot roast.
2012 Haraszthy Family Cellars Zinfandel, Old Vines
LIST PRICE 14.95; OUR PRICE 12.99
Here is a lush, delicious wine with a fun label. The nose is fruit driven with fresh plum, Bing cherry and spicy peppercorn. The mouth-feel is soft with a hint of milk chocolate, sweet oak, and a long vanilla finish. The deep color and firm structure are enhanced by the addition of Petite Sirah (10%) and the firm tannins are softened by moderate oak contact.
2012 Summers Cabernet Sauvignon, Andriana’s Cuvée
LIST PRICE 24.00; OUR PRICE 19.95
Okay, technically this Cuvée is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon grapes produced from several select vineyards in Sonoma (51%) and Napa (49%) Counties, including the Summers’ own vineyards. It is a medium-bodied wine with notes of black currant, cedar and spice. Pair it with roast chicken, London broil and dark chocolate. The full blend is: 78% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12.5% Merlot, 4.5% Petit Verdot, 1.5% Malbec, 1.5% Syrah, 1% Petite Sirah and 1% Cabernet Franc.
