So many times I have recommended Merlot for specific uses and have been told “I don’t like Merlot”. Indeed, for what reason? Merlot is akin to Cabernet, but softer with less gravity. Even this observation can be put to the lie when you consider that some of the most expensive wine in the world is made of Merlot (e.g. Chateau Petrus, whose 2010 bottle is selling for $3800.00 a bottle!) OK, so we are sampling the low end, but with careful choosing one can pick out some very reputable wines. This is your opportunity to check it out and test your past opinion of a much maligned grape.
2012 DeLoach Vineyards Merlot, Heritage
LIST PRICE 12.00; OUR PRICE 9.99
DeLoach Vineyards has been a pioneering producer of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Zinfandel in the Russian River Valley since 1975. Though not known for their Merlot, this bottling at $9.99 may surprise you.
2009 St. Francis Merlot, Sonoma Valley
LIST PRICE 17.99; OUR PRICE 14.99
St. Francis’ Merlot is smooth and elegant with classic flavors and aromas of cherry, red licorice, currant and dried cranberry. Its silky structure is balanced by soft tannins and a bold, lengthy finish.
2011 Napa Cellars Merlot, Napa Valley
LIST PRICE 20.00; OUR PRICE 16.99
This wine has a smooth and inviting fruit forward style. You can’t miss the full-bodied flavors of ripe plums, cherries and blackberries. Sixteen months aging in small oak barrels resulted in a harmonious, rich wine with an impressive long finish.
2012 Seabiscuit Ranch Merlot, Mendocino County
LIST PRICE 22.00; OUR PRICE 18.99
This is a bold full-flavored Merlot. The grapes came from a terraced hilltop vineyard in Reeves Canyon, located on the original Ridgewood Ranch that was Seabiscuit’s home. The crop here ripens with exceptional fruit aromas and flavors, while the cool evening temperatures assist in retaining fresh ripe flavors and natural acidity. Red fruit flavors predominate, balanced with good acidity, leading to a soft mouth-filing silky finish. The wine is styled to accompany foods. Serve with grilled meats or poultry.
2010 Gordon Estate Merlot, Columbia Valley
LIST PRICE 24.00; OUR PRICE 19.95
The brothers Gordon do a good jobe of preserving and, enhancing the character of Columbia Valley fruit. Wild rose flavors alongside earthy forest scents show themselves here. The wines of Washington are more reserved with fruit and display an earthiness that is more akin to the wines of France.
2010 Opolo Vineyards Merlot, Summit Creek, Paso Robles
LIST PRICE 22.00; OUR PRICE 19.50
True to its varietal flavors, this wine showcases the potential of Merlot in the Paso Robles area. Aromas of black cherry, plum, chocolate and red currant magnify the approachability of this wine, while soft tannins and oak nuances lead to a refined mouth feel.
