Louis Lucas, a third generation grape grower, and Superior Court Judge Royce Lewellen met in 1975 through the Santa Maria Wine & Food Society . Louis was a well respected grower who had been supplying premium wine grapes for reputable Napa and Sonoma wineries for decades. Royce Lewellen was a passionate wine enthusiast with a vision for the future of the Santa Barbara County wine industry. Over the next twenty-five years, the Lucas and Lewellen families would grow in a deep friendship that would serve as the foundation for Lucas & Lewellen Vineyards, a Solvang, California based winery with four hundred estate acres situated among three of Santa Barbara County’s separate and distinct climate zones, Santa Ynez Valley, Los Alamos Valley, and the Santa Maria Valley. Joining us this Saturday from the winery is Jacob Reitzin who will discuss and be pouring These central coast wines.
2010 Lucas & Lewellen Chardonnay, Santa Barbara County
LIST PRICE 19.00; OUR PRICE 14.99
The hand-harvested grapes for this Chardonnay, farmed using sustainable practices in our Los Alamos Vineyard, were cold-pressed and fermented to capture their pure fresh flavors and aromas.
2009 Lucas & Lewellen Pinot Noir, Santa Barbara County
LIST PRICE 20.00; OUR PRICE 15.99
This stylish wine is a blend of selected lots from two of their estate vineyards which include four distinct clones. Fermentation took place in small, 1½ ton fermenters which were punched down manually 3-4 times daily for approximately 10 days. After pressing, the wine was immediately barreled, with all its lees, in neutral French oak and aged for 9 months. Signature bright red fruit, savory herbs, wet earth minerality and creaminess are the hallmarks of this premium blend. The palate is refined with a naturally crisp acidity and excellent mid-palate structure giving the wine both weight and buoyancy.
2011 Lucas & Lewellen Pinot Noir, Goodchild High 9 Vineyard
LIST PRICE 29.00; OUR PRICE 22.00
This is a limited vintage from the highest nine acre block of the Goodchild Vineyard, where the cool climate produces highly concentrated clone 667 grapes. This wine was aged sur lees for 11 months in French oak, bringing forth the natural flavors of lively red fruit with smooth tannins and a lingering finish.
2008 Lucas & Lewellen Cabernet Franc, Valley View Vineyard
LIST PRICE 26.00; OUR PRICE 19.99
This wine is from grapes grown in the Valley View Vineyard, east of Solvang in the Santa Ynez Valley. It was aged for 19 months in 1-5 year old French oak barrels. Cabernet Franc is a very old variety which is still dominant in parts of the Loire Valley and Bordeaux. Warm summer temperatures allowed these grapes to fully ripen, giving this wine color, body, flavor and aroma. It exhibits themes of blueberry, kirsch and black cherry with flavors of big, rich, dark, blackberry-raspberry jam followed by ripe, chewy tannins and a long rich finish.
2010 Lucas & Lewellen Malbec, Valley View Vineyard
LIST PRICE 21.00; OUR PRICE 19.50
Here we have an uncommon convergence of landscape, climate and farming expertise at the estate Valley View Vineyard that has generated this wonderful offering of single variety Malbec. The wine has dense flavors and aromas, a creamy texture, and flavors of dark red fruit, cassis, and blackberry. It is a nicely integrated, classic Malbec with silky, soft tannins. The Central Coast Wine Competition awarded the wine a Double-Gold Medal and “Best of Class” distinction.
2008 Lucas & Lewellen Syrah, Santa Barbara County
LIST PRICE 20.00; OUR PRICE 14.99
This Syrah was produced from several clones of the variety harvested from the cool climate Los Alamos vineyards. The wine maker, Megan McGrath Gates, has created a rich, full bodied wine made in a round, jammy, fruity style. After traditional punch downs to mix the cap and juice, it spent 24 months in French Oak. The result is this refined, bold Syrah that is dark and rich with warm earth, spice and leather tones, and black stone fruit on the palate. It received a score of 91-points from The Tasting Panel, November 2013.
