611 S. Palm Canyon Drive, Suite #22, Palm Springs, 92264
Grape varietals that are transplanted from Italy to the soils of California generally retain some of the same characteristics but cannot help picking up higher alcohols and greater fruitiness. The Golden State issues forth fountains of fruity freshness that separates the experience considerably. Here is your opportunity to perceive what I am talking about. There is nothing like spending a Saturday afternoon in intellectual pursuit.
2010 Vingna del Malina Ala del Passero Pinot Grigio, Venezia
LIST PRICE 18.00; OUR PRICE 14.99
Granted this is not the typical light Pinot Grigio from northern Italy, but it is a good choice to stand up to its California counterpart. This Venezia Giulia lovely is richer of body than most yet retains its sense of minerality. The pear-like fruit tones are at the forefront of the 13.5% alcohol wave coursing across the tongue and offer a good counterpoint to the California example to follow.
2013 Luna Pinot Grigio, American Canyon
LIST PRICE 13.50; OUR PRICE 11.99
Luna Pinot Grigio is a pale straw color. Aromas of pear, green apple, white peach and jasmine carry the nose. Hints of Asian spice fill the mouth and the wonderful minerality and full-bodied texture carry through a delicious lemony finish. At 14.2% alcohol, it is definitely full bodied for a PG.
2012 Produttori di Govone Barbera d’Alba, Piemonte
LIST PRICE 14.00; OUR PRICE 11.99
This winery in Piedmont between the cities of Asti and Alba produces a Barbara that undergoes maceration lasting 8 to 10 days in stainless-steel vats. After fermentation, the wine is stabilized allowing all impurities still present to filter down before bottling. The wine has a bouquet of fresh berry fruits and a dry delicate flavor with slight tannin overtones. It is a perfect accompaniment to white and red meat dishes, wild game and cheeses.
2011 Seghesio Vineyards Barbera, Alexander Valley
LIST PRICE 28.00; OUR PRICE 25.99
Edoardo Seghesio immigrated to America in 1886 from the Piedmont region of Italy, home to Barbera. In 1895, he planted his first vineyards to grapes he had come to enjoy in his new country, yet one vineyard was saved for varietals from his homeland. The Barbera clones grown in this vineyard benefit from the warm, dry days in northern Alexander Valley, where the grape’s classic acidity creates a wine with vibrant aromas and a velvety texture.
2013 Farnese Vini Fantini Sangiovese, Abruzzi
LIST PRICE11.00; OUR PRICE 9.99
From the delicate floral strawberry aromas of Montefalco Rosso to the intensely dark and tannic wines of Brunello di Montalcino, Sangiovese has something for everyone. The Fantini by Farnese is a youthful and appealing wine, garnet red in color and quite intense on the nose with vibrant red fruit, cherries and herbal characters. On the palate it has bright fruity notes of strawberry and cherry, with subtle vanilla characters from the oak-aged portion. The wine is well-balanced and medium-bodied with structured, firm tannins, fresh acidity and a long finish.
