Ben Cook, founder and master brewer of Hangar 24, and his buddies used to meet at hangar 24 after an afternoon of flying to trade stories and share a few cold ones that Ben just finished brewing at home. Wanting to learn more about brewing, he attended and graduated from the Master Brewers Program at the University of California, Davis. Following graduation Ben sought out and found a great location adjacent to the Redlands Airport and aptly named his brewery Hangar 24.These days, the location of where these fine beers are brewed has changed, but the quality level never lessens despite the increase in volume. Joining us this Saturday will be Rob Reynolds, Brewery Market Manager.
Hangar 24 Orange Wheat, 4.6% alc, 12 oz; 6-pack $8.99
The citrus aroma, the light airy mouth-feel, and the tangy finish are this unfiltered beer’s trademarks. This is accomplished by adding whole locally grown oranges throughout the brewing process, which perfectly coalesce with the wheat and barley base. The result is a tasty brew that is crisp, tangy and refreshing. Gold medal at the Los Angeles County Fair.
Food Pairing: All types of salads, omelets, many types of fish including sushi, some less-spicy Mexican or Thai food (the citrus flavor ties in well), buffalo mozzarella cheese.
Hangar 24 Amarillo Pale Ale, 5.5% alc, 12 oz; 6-pack $8.99
Midwestern malted barley provides the basis for this smooth beer. Add to the experience, the flavor and aroma of citrusy Northwestern hops and you have Hangar 24’s version of a true classic: the American Pale Ale. Brew master Ben has the master’s touch of carefully adding selected hops at just the right times during the brewing process and including post fermentation, to give a deep hop flavor without the coarse bitterness that some associate with pale ale. You should agree the beer is balanced and resinous.
Food Pairing: Great with spicy Mexican dishes such as enchiladas and chile rellano, or spicy shrimp dishes or grilled fish.
Hangar 24 Alt-Bier Amber Ale, 6.0% alc, 12 oz; 6-pack $8.99
This red ale is Hangar 24’s unique version of a northern German Alt-Bier. It starts with a silky caramel smoothness, followed by toasty, bready flavors and finishes with a hint of chocolate roast. These flavors all come through in the aroma and combine in a truly unique, very clean, complex, Alt-Bier. It is traditional except for one twist, chocolate roasted malt. The chocolate malt adds a little more complexity to the beer and gives a perceived dryness that helps to balance the caramel malty flavor. Gold Medal California State Fair.
Food Pairing: Hearty foods such as roast pork or chicken & smoked sausage. Roasting or grilling creates caramelization in food which pairs with the caramel flavors of the beer. Aged Gouda or Cheshire cheese works well here also.
Hangar 24 Betty IPA, 6.5% alc, 22 oz; 6.30
Betty is an American IPA boasting a blend of Mosaic, Citra, Simcoe and Centennial hops. Eight months were spent perfecting this hop blend, and the huge range of juicy aromas and flavors were worth the effort: tropical fruit, citrus zest, berries, stone fruit and pine are in abundance, over a pleasantly bitter base. The beer’s name pays homage to the pin-up art that adorned the planes of American B17 pilots during World War 2. These pilots would commission these fantastic works of art on the noses of their planes, serving as a symbol of the home they were fighting to protect.
Hangar 24 Double IPA, 9% alc, 22 oz; $8.49
This assertive ale is brewed with four distinctly American hops: Centennial, Citra, Columbus and Simcoe, all beautifully balanced by five malts and generous additions of local orange blossom honey. Try this for a sensory experience: the fresh aroma of citrus, pine and grapefruit with the bold taste of hops and sweet honey. The Double IPA style is distinctly American, and so are the flavors of the specific hops used.
Food Pairing: Grilled lamb, smoked beef brisket, chicken fried steak, crème brûlée, sharp blue cheeses.
Hangar 24 Polycot, 7.2% alc, 22 oz; $6.30
Polycot is a wheat beer brewed using hundreds of pounds of organic apricots grown in Southern California. This beer is brewed during the very small window of time when the apricots are at their peak of freshness, usually early July. The pureed apricots add a wonderful fruit flavor to the beer and combine with the wheat for a refreshing tart finish.
Food Pairing: Chinese crispy duck or pork dishes, pulled pork foods, light desserts or ice cream, herb or goat cheese.
