611 S. Palm Canyon Drive, Suite #1, Palm Springs, 92264
Over 75 years ago Ernest and Julio Gallo began what was to become the largest winery and wine distribution system in the world. Today their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren work in the Winery in the belief that family ownership is the most effective way for the Winery to continue as a world leader in the wine industry. E. & J. Gallo Winery continues as the world’s largest family-owned winery and the largest exporter of California wine. It has become a serious importer of wine brands, as well. This Saturday, we will try very popular whites from Italy and Spain, and then switch to 3 of their California properties from Napa, Sonoma and the Central Coast.
LAMARCA PROSECCO, VENETO, ITALY
List price 16.95; our price 13.99
This sparkling wine, referred to as Spumante in Italy, has bubbles that are full textured and persistent. On the nose the wine brings fresh citrus with hints of honey and white flowers. The flavor is fresh and clean, with ripe citrus, lemon, green apple, and touches of grapefruit, minerality, and some toast. The finish is light, refreshing, and crisp. Wine Spectator gave it a 90-point rating.
2009 MARTIN CÓDAX ALBARIÑO, RÍAS BAIXAS, SPAIN
List price 16.50; our price 13.99
Albariño is a high-quality white wine grape variety that thrives in Spain’s Galicia region and in Portugal’s Vinho Verde region where it’s known as Alvarinho. The Rías Baixas appellation, located in Galicia (Northwest coast of Spain), is Albariño’s homeland, and where some of the best examples in the wine world are produced. The grape variety is low yielding and the berries are small with thick skins, typically resulting in flavorful and rich wines. The wine scored 89 points from Wine Enthusiast: “its all about white fruits, green herbs and apple. The palate has a firm, standard, high-quality mouthfeel along with tart apple, white peach and pineapple flavors. The finish is pure lime and snap, while the refreshment quotient runs long and strong.”
2009 WILLIAM HILL CHARDONNAY, NAPA VALLEY
List price 22.00; our price 19.99
From the Silverado Bench on the southeastern slopes of Napa Valley, comes this wine revealing elegant ripe tree fruit flavors and some toasty oak, brown spice and butter. The wine has a moderate mouthfeel and sweetness backed up by refined acidity. It received 89 points from Wine Spectator: ‘Openly fruity and friendly, this is creamy, rich and full-bodied, layered with fig, melon, apricot and spice. Holds its focus and ends with a long, pure finish. Drink now through 2015.”
2009 MACMURRAY RANCH PINOT NOIR, SONOMA COAST
List price 22.00; our price 19.99
From the Sonoma Coast wine region, this Pinot Noir has elegant varietal fruit character, with rich aromas and flavors of raspberry, cherry, red current and boysenberries. Hints of mushroom are supported by a subtle oak influence. This wine will evolve into a silky and smooth wine with time in the bottle.
2009 LOUIS M. MARTINI CABERNET SAUVIGNON, NAPA VALLEY
List price 28.50; our price 25.50
Louis M. Martini had come to the U.S. from Italy as a boy in 1899 to join his father in San Francisco. In 1906, he made his first wine and showed great promise as a winemaker. His father sent him back to Italy to study winemaking, and by 1911 he had returned to California to begin a long and illustrious career as a grape grower and winemaker. This Cab is sourced from vineyards up and down the Napa Valley. The wine exhibits lovely aromas of cassis, sweet herbs and hints of pipe tobacco. Intriguing flavors of ripe black cherries, deep, briary red fruits, and old world complexities linger throughout the finish. This is a well structured and balanced wine that is medium-to-full-bodied and is ready to enjoy now or can be aged up to 5 years.
