This Saturday, Duckhorn Winery will host our wine tasting event. It has been a while since Duckhorn joined us but we have long been looking forward to having the winery people here to update us on the latest releases. If you have not paid a visit to this winery, you should plan on it in the future. It is one of Napa’s finest wineries, producing some of the best varietals in the valley. We will concentrate on the first line bottlings and perhaps later on bring them back to taste the new releases in the Decoy line.
2014 Duckhorn Sauvignon Blanc, Napa Valley
LIST PRICE 25.99 OUR PRICE 23.99
This elegant wine is a blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon harvested from the estates and other select premium Napa Valley vineyards. A portion of the Sauvignon Blanc was barrel-fermented in French oak. This technique and the addition of the Sémillon add depth and complexity to the aroma and palate, enhancing the ripe citrus and tropical flavors of the Sauvignon Blanc.
2013 Duckhorn Chardonnay, Napa Valley
LIST PRICE 34.00; OUR PRICE 29.99
The Chardonnay comes from the coolest regions of the valley. French oak barrel fermentation with lees stirring, results in a Chardonnay with vivid aromas of white peach, lime, melon and vanilla bean, followed by undertones of praline, fresh pie dough and a hint of pistachio. On the palate, flavors of pear, apple and lemon are underscored by beautifully balanced oak, which lends warm nuances and layers of complexity that carry through to the long, silky finish.
2012 Goldeneye Pinot Noir, Anderson Valley
LIST PRICE 50.00; OUR PRICE 47.00
Duckhorn began making high quality, cool-climate Goldeneye Pinot Noir from the estate winery in the Anderson Valley in 1997. Blending grapes from four estate vineyards enhances depth and complexity. Winemaker Michael Fay selects only a small percentage of the finest fruit before applying small-lot, artisanal winemaking techniques. The wine received a 92-point rating from Wine Spectator Magazine.
2012 Duckhorn Merlot, Napa Valley
LIST PRICE 52.00; OUR PRICE 48.00
This Merlot is a complex blend of several individual vineyard lots, incorporating fruit from Duckhorn’s Estate Vineyards and from top independent growers throughout the Napa Valley. It is a rich and cohesive expression of the entire Napa Valley, reflecting the varied microclimates and soils of the appellation. The wine is quite pretty, with ripe currant flavors, some chocolate and hints of blueberry. It has medium body, firm tannins and a crisp finish.
2012 Duckhorn Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley
LIST PRICE 70.00; OUR PRICE 65.00
This really is a lovely expression of Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon with aromas of black raspberry, red currant, vanilla bean and milk chocolate. On the palate, firm yet supple tannins add weight and structure, supporting layers of plum, raspberry and cinnamon spice. There is a fine balance of sweet oak and earth. The blend is 79% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Merlot, 2% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot.
2013 Canvasback Cabernet Sauvignon, Red Mt., Washington
LIST PRICE 40.00; OUR PRICE 37.00
This is a young appellation and a very exciting one at that. Needless to say, the wine was named after a duck. Wine Enthusiast Magazine gave the wine a 90-point rating: “Coming from a who’s who of Red Mountain vineyards, the inaugural release of this brand from Duckhorn Vineyards offers generous notes of dark coffee, espresso bean, dark cherries, sage and vanilla, with a pleasing interplay between fruit and barrel (64% new French). The plum and coffee flavors are restrained in style, with well-integrated tannins.”
