This Saturday we are showing the wines of six different wineries from Napa County. No doubt we could spend the rest of the year showcasing Napa wineries and not get to them all. At least we can add to our Napa perspective of wines tasted recently. Part of the problem of learning about Napa wine labels is that almost all of the wineries are producing second and third lines of wine varietals. This explodes the problem, exacerbates our inability to gain knowledge, but, happily, offers us a challenge that is seemingly endless.
2014 Robert Mondavi Fumé Blanc, Napa Valley
List price 15.00; Our price 11.99
Wine Spectator 90 points: "Juicy and crisp, with green papaya and lemon flavors that are bright and refreshing, highlighting fresh lemon thyme notes on the finish. Shows a good balance of intensity and restraint."
Wine Enthusiast 90 points: "From the winery most responsible in America for popularizing this style of Sauvignon Blanc, this vintage delivers savory, lemony goodness, within a light-to-medium-bodied frame. Integrated and round on the palate, it's a great wine for the table. Editors' Choice."
This is a blend of 94% Sauvignon Blanc and 6% Semillon.
2014 The Hess Collection Chardonnay, Napa Valley
List price 20.00; Our price 17.99
The Su'skol Vineyard Chardonnay is carefully farmed with multiple clones to emphasize fruit with wonderful acidity and balance. This crisp and clean, low oak Chardonnay shows aromas and flavors of apple, pear and a slight touch of tropical fruits, accented by aromas of honeysuckle. Try with grilled seafood, shrimp or crab.
Wine Enthusiast gives it 90 points: "The producer pulls from its estate Su’skol Vineyard for this wine, which opens in an aromatic flirtation of sweet honeysuckle, revealing the site’s abundance of Musqué clone. Crisp on the entry and mid-palate, it shows a full-bodied style as it opens—notes of pear and fig are wrapped between spicy nutmeg and a viscous bite of oak on the finish."
2014 Ahnfeldt Carducci Rosato, Napa Valley
List price 12.00; Our price 9.99
This Rosé is a blend of four grape varieties, all from Napa Valley: 53% Malbec, 22% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Syrah and 12% Pinot Noir. It is light to medium bodied, juicy, yet elegant with a smooth finish. Great as an aperitif or enjoy with almost any meal.
2014 Raymond Merlot, R Collection Lot 2, California
List price 14.00; Our price 10.99
This full bodied Merlot features flavors of cherry, rhubarb, raspberry and plum flavors along with hints of earth and spice in the toasty vanilla, mocha finish. It has a good balance of acid and tannins with a smooth finish.
2012 Provocative Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley
List price 29.00; Our price 24.95
The grapes come from vineyards in Rutherford, Oakville, St. Helena and The Carneros. While it has just enough Cabernet (75%) to call it such, the remainder of the blend is interesting: 14% Merlot, 6.6% Syrah, 3% Petit Verdot, 1.4% Malbec and a splash of Cabernet Franc, because, why not?
2014 Cultivar Wine Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley
List price 29.00; Our price 26.99
It is impressive when you get Napa Cabernet with depth of fruit in balance with structure and elegance for under $30.00. Enjoy subtle notes of vanilla and spice melded with violets and roses, and a long smooth finish.
