We continue our sampling of international wines this Saturday that represent the premium end of the spectrum. The wines are imported by Specialty Cellars, the same company that was introduced last Saturday with Carlos Munoz in control. All of the international wines then were under 10.00 and were a great bargain as was proven by the brisk sales. All the new wines are from different countries and producers, as well, and represent high quality imbibing.
Bellenda Prosecco, Conegliano Valdobbianene, Italy
LIST PRICE 20.00; OUR PRICE 18.95
This is a delicate and subtly aromatic spumante, produced through the natural fermentation of the Glera grapes cultivated on the hills of Conegliano. It has a lovely aromatic bouquet with fruity overtones. It is dry on the palate which makes for an excellent aperitif, but really is best as an accompaniment to hors d’oeuvres, particularly those based on fish.
2014 Pebble Cove Sauvignon Blanc, New Zealand
LIST PRICE 17.00; OUR PRICE 14.99
This artful blend of Sauvignon Bland fruit from the Awatere Valley in Marlborough expresses typical varietal characters of the region. There are gooseberry aromas on the nose, followed on the palate by succulent lychee and citrus characters with a hint of pineapple. The crisp acidity makes this delightful wine perfect for the richer fish entrees such as salmon and tuna.
2014 Bodega Roca “Ombu” Malbec, Mendoza, Argentina
LIST PRICE 15.00; OUR PRICE 11.99
Aromas of red fruit are predominant and combine with sweet notes of vanilla. There is a significant body structure on the palate thanks to the high concentration of well-ripened tannins. The wine is full bodied and deep showing great persistence in the mouth.
2012 Luis Duarte Rubrica Vinho Tinto, Portugal
LIST PRICE 45.00; OUR PRICE 39.99
This is an amazing blend of 5 grapes that one would not ordinarily expect to find in one bottle. The blend is Alicante-Bouschet (40%), Touriga National (20%), Aragonez (15%), Syrah (15%) and Petit Verdot (10%). Wine Enthusiast Magazine gave the wine a 94-point rating: “Deep garnet color. Aroma of black, very fresh berries, complemented by more complex aromas of spices and mint. Flavor rich concentrated black fruit. Firm structure, with fine tannins and a refreshing acidity present.”
2014 Chateau des Charmes Vidal Ice Wine Niagara, Canada
LIST PRICE 42.00; OUR PRICE 39.99
Now for a stunning expression of ice wine, a dessert wine that is not cloying or tiring on the palate, but balanced and simply delicious. Peel marmalade, apricot and spun sugar on the nose, it conjures up palate-coating flavors of grilled pineapple, concentrated blood orange and honeyed stone fruit. It finishes strong with a lingering, mouth-watering aftertaste. A special treat on its own, it also serves well with crème brûlée or crème caramel.
