Dinner parties and celebrations are in the planning stage if not underway. We are addressing this holiday season with a selection of red wines that offer judicious value and in no way will offend. In fact, the wines are quite likable, but you should come by on Saturday to taste and evaluate for yourselves. (Sorry about that, White Wine lovers.)
2018 Georges DuBoeuf Beaujolais-Villages Nouveau, France
List price 15.00; Our price 12.99
Beaujolais Nouveau are by design a youthful celebration of the region and style of the Gamay grape, but that doesn't mean they need be simple. Georges Duboeuf's Beaujolais-Villages Nouveau typically delivers more complexity, depth and character than many Nouveau wines. You can expect a wine of balance and character, with floral, dark fruit and spice notes. This wine is a step above the usual Beaujolais Nouveau and could easily hold for a couple of years, but I seriously doubt the eventuality of anyone holding on to this wine (its so good).
2015 Taka Pinot Noir, Marlborough, New Zealand
List price 20.00; Our price 14.99
This Marlborough Pinot Noir is full of bright berry fruit flavors, a hint of spicy oak and is medium bodied with a smooth finish. It’s an excellent choice for salmon, chicken, turkey and white meats.
2015 Primarius Winery Pinot Noir, Oregon
List price 17.00; Our price 14.99
The aromatics suggest brambly berries and Bing cherries accented by some subtle notes of cinnamon and clove. The palate carries these aromas on and compliments them with lively acidity and just a hint of oak sweetness. The mouth-feel is round and pleasant; look for a hint of nutmeg. The finish lingers with soft, silky tannins and leaves an aftertaste of sweet red and black fruits against spicy elements.
2015 Sterling Vintner’s Collection Meritage, California
List price 14.00; Our price 11.99
The Meritage is a blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec and Petit Verdot. The wine opens with an inviting and vivid nose of raspberries, cranberry, cherry and milk chocolate. The wine is juicy on the palate where the nose rings true with flavors of mixed berry fruit, mocha and subtle toasted spice. The well-integrated oak influence offers a pleasing warm vanilla note and leads to a long-lasting finish with balanced acidity.
2016 Ironstone Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon, Lodi
List price 13.00; Our price 10.99
This 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon is rich yet very approachable. Its dark cherry and toasted oak aromas lead into juicy black currant, raspberry and dark cherry flavors. The luscious, well-balanced wine has a sweet middle palate that finishes with a toasty oak component. The blend: 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Cabernet Franc, 5% Petite Sirah. Serve with a variety of roasted, broiled or barbecued beef dishes. It also pairs well with lamb, wild game such as venison and wild boar, hearty vegetable dishes and strong cheeses.
2012 Three Pines Black Granite Red Blend, California
List price 14.00 Our price 11.99
The Riboli Family fashioned this dark and smooth wine to exhibit wild berry and blackberry fruit. Add a touch of spice to the full flavored wine and you have a wine that pairs well with the likes of barbeque ribs and pastas.
The blend is 30% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Syrah and 20% Petite Sirah. All our favorite reds!
