There is really nothing to tie these wines together other than the fact they are produced in California. In fact, all are different varietals and an interesting cross-section of bouquets and flavors. The finish of our tasting will be quite unique in that we will be opening a late harvest Johannisberg Riesling from Napa made by Beringer Vineyards in 1986. The balance of sugar to acid is the key for longevity and will be on display here. This is a rare opportunity for the inquisitive wine aficionado, as there is not much of this in existence any more.
2015 Sarah Christina Chardonnay, Lodi
List price 14.00; Our price 11.99
This wine has an aroma of citrus and tropical notes that are vibrant and rich. The flavors have characteristics
of melon, citrus fruit, apples and a slight bit of tropical fruit, with a crisp freshness from a good balance of acidity. The fresh fruit flavors and aromas of this wine lend themselves to grilled halibut, or a Chinese chicken salad, ham with a pineapple glaze and most preparations of salmon.
2013 Rock Rabbit Merlot, Central Coast
List price 12.00; Our price 9.99
This Central Coast Merlot has flavors of ripe plum, blackberry, and cherry fruit. It is a lighter style Merlot with good fruit and smooth tannins. The ripe plum, cherry and blackberry fruit proceed nicely to a velvety finish.
It should pair wel with your pork, veal and lamb dishes as well as roasted chicken.
2016 Fallbrook Winery Syrah, South Coast
List price 16.00; Our price 14.99
A leader in California’s emerging South Coast wine region, Fallbrook Winery has a good microclimate for creating wines with the capacity to garner awards. Since its inception in 1981, Fallbrook Winery has focused on creating wines of quality and value, for which we are always searching. The grapes for this wine are fermented in large bins while being continuously punched down. This adds to the intensity of the fruit we prize in Syrah. I like this wine for barbeques.
2015 Robert Hall Zinfandel, Paso Robles
List price 16.00; Our price 13.95
This Zinfandel is a full-bodied wine with a dense core of fresh raspberry and cranberry fruit intertwined with peppery spice. Soft tannins and moderate acidity nicely balance the robust fruit and spice flavors in this food friendly wine. Enjoy with a juicy steak, pungent cheese or decadent chocolate desserts.
2017 Sterling Cabernet Sauvignon, Sonoma
List price 14.00; Our price 11.99
Cocoa-berry aromas open the nose, complemented by toasty oak spices, plum, cherries and a touch of smoke and violets. The palate unfolds with succulent blackberry and Bing cherry flavors, accented by varietal notes of black pepper and espresso. Rich, dark chocolaty tannins escort the vibrant fruit into long finish. Pair this medium-bodied Cabernet Sauvignon with grilled meats, sausage pasta or poultry in a rich sauce.
1986 Beringer Johannisberg Riesling Special Select Late Harvest
List price 30.00; Our price 19.99
We have only a few half bottles left of this 32 year-old dessert wine. Frankly, I am anxious to try it and thought you might be interested, as well. The grapes were grown in the Big Ranch Road Vineyard in the cool southern tim of the Napa Valley. The incidence of Botrytis Cinerea was very high with a sugar level of 43 gm/100ml and a total acidity of .94gm/100ml. The juice was cold fermented in the German tradition and resulted in a finished wine of 16.4gm/100ml.
