Jerry Lohr planted his first 280 acres of grapes beginning in 1972 in Monterey County's Arroyo Seco appellation, primarily to Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. However, Bordeaux type varietals are not ideally suited for cool-climate winegrowing so he began planting Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and other red varietals in the Paso Robles region in 1988. Today J. Lohr Vineyards & Wines includes more than 900 acres of vineyards in Monterey County, 2,000 acres in Paso Robles, and 33 acres in Napa Valley. Joining us Saturday will be Bruce Smitham, California Manager for the winery. This will be the last Saturday events before the holidays.
2015 J. Lohr Sauvignon Blanc, Carol’s Vineyard, Napa Valley
List price 20.00; Our price 17.99
Well made, year to year, this vintage shows honeysuckle, Meyer lemon and fig, with a refreshingly balanced palate of grapefruit, key lime followed by a long elegant finish. The wine plays well off of salads featuring herbs, maybe ruby grapefruit, hazelnuts and a citrus vinaigrette. Of course, try it with any seafood.
2014 J. Lohr Chardonnay, October Night, Arroyo Seco
List price 24.00; Our price 20.99
The vineyard producing the grapes for this wine is comprised largely of Dijon Clone, known also as the Musqué Clone, which produces a very distinctive and attractive, sometimes powerful floral character. Floral aromas, along with tangerine, pineapple, lime zest and vanilla lead to a lush and full bodied wine with a long finish. Try it with hazelnut-encrusted chicken, grilled lobster or halibut with orange beurre blanc.
2015 J. Lohr Pinot Noir, Falcon’s Perch, Monterey Co.
List price 17.00; Our price 14.99
The Falcon’s Perch Pinot Noir delivers ripe strawberry and sage varietal aromas, and is delivered with a toasty vanilla oak signature. It is plump and ripe on the palate with a touch of talc on the finish. Dare to try it with crab cakes, chicken in white or red sauce, or with pork.
2015 J. Lohr Valdiguié, Wildflower Vineyard, Monterey Co.
List price 10.00; Our price 9.99
Originally thought to be the Gamay Noir grape of France’s Beaujolais winegrowing region, U.C. Davis has since identified this grape to be Valdiguié from an area in the southwest of France. Regardless of its origin and identity, Valdiguié grown in the windy, cold Arroyo Seco produces a wine reminiscent of the ‘Crus’ of Beaujolais: Morgon, Fleurie and Moulin-a-Vent. The wine displays enticing berry fruit flavors with a vibrant acidity and soft tannins.
2014 J. Lohr Cabernet Sauvignon, Hilltop Vineyard, Paso Robles
List price 35.00; Our price 29.99
This Cab is full bodied with strong oak and dark fruits featuring plum, black cherry and boysenberry alongside a slight mineral edge. It has nice structure and a finish that brings the dark fruits to a more subtle level and rolls on some notes of chocolate with a scent of cinnamon and nutmeg.
2014 J. Lohr Petite Sirah, Tower Road Vineyard, Paso Robles
List price 26.00; Our price 22.99
Inviting aromas of blackberry and a bouquet of hazelnut from French oak aging are followed by juicy flavors of ollalieberry on the palate. Petite Sirah is known for bold astringency and the 2014 Tower Road doesn’t disappoint. It pairs well with aromatic herbs and pan-seared meat dishes such as rosemary lamb chops with roasted fennel.
