Blends allow a winery an opportunity to sell off varietal wines they hold in excess, as well as creating a composite wine that makes the most of the disparate parts. Winemakers love putting together blends because this is where the art of winemaking manifests itself.
Even if you are producing a Cabernet, the various barrels have to be blended to create the house style. Those lots that do not make the cut are sold off or blended into another offering. Then there are the winemakers who want to show off their creativity by combining an interesting selection of varietals. These are the blend efforts we are trying this Saturday. Ultimately, some wineries feature a blend that tops their line-up. Only the best barrels become these beauties.
2014 Tooth & Nail Wines “Fragrant Snare”
LIST PRICE 20.00; OUR PRICE 17.95
Tropical and passion fruits combine in the nose with white peach, orange blossom, honeysuckle and clove. In the mouth, ripe nectarine, fresh tangy pineapple, and bursts of citrus leave a refreshing finish. The blend is 50% Chardonnay (Rutherford), 20% Gewurztraminer (Napa Carneros) 20% Muscat (Paso Robles), 10% Viognier (Paso Robles)
2013 Bonny Doon Claret
LIST PRICE 16.00; OUR PRICE 13.99
This lean blend is neither overly alcoholic nor overly oaked; it is precisely what one would imagine A Proper Claret to be. The wine contains a substantial dollop of Petit Verdot, adding a silky note of violets and textural elegance, in counterpoint to the lead-in-the-pencil firmness offered by the inclusion of the virile Tannat. Tannat, the grape implicated in the French paradox (and the Vinifera variety with resveratrol levels that are off the charts), is principally grown in Gascony. The wine has lushness with soft tannins and a lovely minty, cedary aspect adding to its perfect balance. The blend: 46% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Merlot, 15% Tannat, 13% Petit Verdot, 8% Syrah, 1% Petite Sirah.
2014 Bell Wine Cellars “Big Guy Red”
LIST PRICE 17.00; OUR PRICE 15.99
Cabernet Sauvignon from Lodi lays the firm foundation for this wine. Syrah from the Sierra Foothills and Central Coast lend ripe, luscious fruit to the nose and to a juicy, delicious palate. On the nose the wine opens with sweet oak notes of vanilla accompanied by perfumed raspberries, underlain with hints of dried cranberry. Well balanced, with a lovely structure, the soft tannins and sweet vanilla oak carry the red fruits, delivering flavors that gently expand on the palate.
2013 Pomar Junction Vineyard “Brooster”
LIST PRICE 20.00; OUR PRICE 16.50
Here is a summertime red that is big, bold, and juicy, the perfect pairing for your barbecue. We carry many of Pomar Junction’s excellent wines and hope to soon have the winery join us for a tasting event. Central Coast grapes combine for this red berry and oak fusion that is simply fun to drink.
2012 Sterling Vineyards Celebration Red
LIST PRICE 25.00; OUR PRICE 19.99
At its dark core are four primary varietals – Merlot, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Petite Sirah – which create layers of brambly berries, black cherries and spice. The nose shows signature Napa Valley style with robust fruit and heady oak influence that is delivered in waves of caramel, cocoa and vanilla. Moderately firm tannins frame the voluptuous flavors, which extend into a long, satisfying finish. A perfect wine for barbecue.
2011 Opolo Vineyards Concerto, Paso Robles
LIST PRICE 32.00; OUR PRICE 27.95
Concerto is a Bordeaux-style blend made from grapes sourced from the rolling hills of Paso Robles. Aging in French and American oak barrels highlights concentrated flavors of cherry and black current. There are ample soft tannins contributing to the long satisfying finish.
