Cabernet Sauvignon grapes are grown almost everywhere in California but no area does it better than Napa Valley. It was decreed that way by Bacchus himself. The problem has become the cost of the land supporting the vines. A farmer can grow grapes far more economically anywhere else, which automatically puts a stress on Napa pricing. Our challenge today is to find some inexpensive examples of the winemaker’s art that still reflects the potential quality of Napa. The parameter this week is 10 to 20 dollars. Even at $10.00, the Napa fruit is going to be blended with out of county grapes. However, for an extra $5.00, the bottle becomes 100% of the appellation. These are rough estimates, but you can test my hypothesis yourself this Saturday.

2008 CARTLIDGE & BROWNE CABERNET SAUVIGNON, NORTH COAST
List price 11.50; our price 9.99
The wine’s aromas combine ripe, juicy fruit notes of cassis and blueberry with classic mocha, sweet tobacco, and cedar spice. Particularly impressive in its lush, dense mouth feel, it offers full-throttle, jammy black fruit brought into focus by a dollop of spicy, smoky oak. The wine can be enjoyed with virtually any grilled or roasted meat, but pairs especially well with fine cuts of beef or loin lamb chops. The California State Fair awarded the wine 91 points.

The founding of this winery goes back to 1900 with a track record of fine wine production that is impossible to equal. This wine is loaded with lush blackberry and black-currant character, with nuances of red plum and cedar box. Hints of vanilla and smoky oak spice elevate the rich aromas and add complexity to the bright, beautifully balanced flavors. 2009 CARTLIDGE & BROWNE CABERNET SAUVIGNON, NAPA VALLEY
List price 21.50; our price 18.99
This wine displays classic Cabernet aromatics: cassis and black cherry fruit, espresso, cedar, graphite, and a touch of leather. Oak-aging adds attractive spice cake suggestions. It is expansive on the palate, but with enough poise and fleshy character to easily carry its rich tannins. The wine’s flavors cover a spectrum of fruits, from black cherry to plum and fig.
