Randall Grahm, forever to be known as California’s “Rhone Ranger”, is one of those colorful characters in the wine industry that has helped shape the way wine is produced, labeled and packaged. His labels can be playful, old world artful, and sometimes even cartoonish. Yet, he is a serious winemaker. Joining us from the winery is our old friend, Keith Shulsky, to lead us along the wine trail from Santa Cruz.
2014 Bonny Doon Gravitas
LIST PRICE 16.00; OUR PRICE 13.99
Gravitas is a blend of Semillon (54%), Sauvignon Blanc (43.5%) and Orange Muscat (2.5%). The nose has a perfume of magnolia flowers and scent of white peaches, with suggestions of ripe Pear, sweet green grass, exotic saffron and a touch of lavender honey. But wait, there’s more: A bit of bergamot orange blossom, jasmine, and key lime custard, quince and Madagascar vanilla. These aromas along with orange blossom, jasmine, lime and vanilla are echoed on the palate. Add a light, fresh acidity and you have a savory wine, perfect with all manner of seafood and lighter entrees.
2013 Bonny Doon Claret
LIST PRICE 16.00; OUR PRICE 13.99
This Cab (46%) is blended with Petit Verdot (13%), Merlot (17%), Tannat (15%), Syrah (8%) and Petite Sirah (1%) to produce a dry, interesting wine. It’s silky in texture with flavors of cola, sour cherry candy, prune, pomegranate and raspberry. Refreshingly moderate in alcohol, it has remarkable delicacy and a decent tannic grip. Wine Enthusiast Magazine gave it a 90-point rating.
2014 Bonny Doon Merlot
LIST PRICE 15.00; OUR PRICE 12.99
We are all aware there has been to some extent a sort of “ethnic cleansing” of Merlot in the Central Coast since the release of the film, “Sideways,” yet Merlot remains an important grape not only for blending, but on its own as a softer, more gentler red wine experience. The full nose shows cherry, cranberry, plum and spice and as it opens, it reveals smoked notes, black cherry, cedar and sweet spice. It is elegant and plush on the palate, with dark cherry, plum and blackberry fruit balanced with spice and black pepper. The blend is 76% Merlot, 17% Cabernet Franc, 5% Syrah, 1% Grenache and 1% Mourvèdre.
2009 Bonny Doon Nebbiolo
LIST PRICE 40.00; OUR PRICE 35.95
The winery feels this is the finest Nebbiolo it has ever produced. Incredibly bright in the nose (not always the first descriptor that comes to mind with the Nebbiolo of Barolo), the wine is bursting with fruit: raspberry, blackberry, cherry, plum, and the classic suggestions of cedar, rose petals and menthol. In the mouth, you will find firm tannins, remarkable depth and a saline/mineral quality contributing to added complexity.
2012 Bonny Doon Syrah, “Le Posseur”
LIST PRICE 24.00; OUR PRICE 19.99
The Syrah was sourced from four exceptional cool climate Central Coast growers in the Santa Maria area, known for exceptional quality and close care of their vineyards. The grapes from each vineyard were hand harvested, sorted, and fermented individually. The result is an elegant blend of concentrated black fruits, spice, and earth. Allowing the wine to breathe would prove beneficial.
2011 Bonny Doon Le Cigare Volant
LIST PRICE 45.00; OUR PRICE 39.99
The nose opens with dark, cool loamy earth and suggestions of raspberries, plums and cherry/chocolate. On the palate, it is sleek and racy with a lively acidity, very soft tannins and great persistence. This is a wine from an extremely cool and elegant vintage, and by all experience, should be a great prospect for very long ageing and development.
