We have had requests for Eastern European wines and have begun stocking some that are rather interesting. Also, we are enlarging the Greek wine selection because, frankly, the wines really are quite good. This includes, for you Santorini lovers, a Santorini Assyrtiko that is one of best I’ve ever tasted. Represented as well are Slovenia, Hungary and Croatia.
2015 Sigalas Santorini Assyrtiko, Greece
LIST PRICE 26.00; OUR PRICE 23.99
A certified organically farmed vineyard on the island of Santorini, Sigalas is producing some of the most sought after white wines in Greece. These intensely aromatic whites, based on the indigenous Assirtiko grape, are grown in the volcanic soils of Santorini. These wines have excellent structure, good acidity and a long, full flavored finish. With a unique growing method, whereby the vines are trained into a cylindrical shape, the fruit ripens gently within the basket to protect it from the strong ocean winds. High humidity at night allows for just enough moisture for the grapes to develop and ensure the minerality that supports the delicate fruit.
2012 Kabaj Sivi Pinot Gris, Slovenia
LIST PRICE 22.00; OUR PRICE 19.50
In the glass, it shows a stunning coppery strawberry color with a round, creamy texture. In addition to the lifted fruit notes of green apple and elegant floral aromas, this wine shows a gentle tannic grip and both sweet and savory tones – custard, brioche, and macadamia nuts. It is a dry and velvety, bold and serious white, unlike the Italian Pinot Grigios you may be familiar with. Serve with hearty vegetables or a robust cheese plate.
2012 Pfneiszl Kékfrankos, Hungary
LIST PRICE 17.00; OUR PRICE 14.99
Wine & Spirits Magazine gave this wine a 90-point rating: “Birgit Pfneiszl grows this wine on the slate and sandstone hills just west of Lake Fertö (better known as Neusiedlersee across the border in Austria). Ujra Együtt (meaning “together again”) is a nod to the family’s reunification with the vineyards her grandparents left behind when they fled to Austria, where the family still makes wines under the name Pfneisl (no z). This is farmed organically and vinified in stainless steel without added yeasts. It’s a lean, graceful Kékfrankos, (Blaufränkisch in Austria) with tart cherry fruit and a cool, stony minerality giving it length and firmness.
2014 Coronica Teran, Croatia
LIST PRICE 22.50; OUR PRICE 19.99
The Teran grape isn’t known for its delicacy, but in the hands of Moreno Coronica, from his vineyards in Istria, a peninsula in the Adriatic, the grape’s harsh acidity is tamed. Made in barrique, the wine is herbaceous and blue-fruited with grounding tannins and abundant spice. Added into the blend is 10% Cab and 10% Merlot.
2010 Alpha Estate Xinomavro, Northern Greece
LIST PRICE 23.00; OUR PRICE 19.99
This wine was aged for 12 months in French oak and emphasizes harmony and restraint. Its peppery red-fruit aroma, really fragrant, follows through with wonderful freshness on the palate. Subtle tannins are finely integrated with the fruit allowing for a surprisingly delicate and very persistent finish, balanced by the grape’s typical earthiness and acidity.
2008 Skouras Agiorgitico Grande Cuvée, Nemea, Greece
LIST PRICE 30.00; OUR PRICE 26.95
This wine is made from the Agiorgitiko (or St. George) grape. It is aged in new French oak for approximately 12 months. Mocha, raspberry, sour cherry and spice are the focus of this delicious red from Skouras. The wine has focus and a masculine edge with a broad finish filled with red currant. It should pair well with dried meats, spicy pasta sauces and flavorful cheeses. Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate rated it 90 points.
