For years now, we have enjoyed in our tasting room the wonderful wines of Opolo Vineyards. This Paso Robles winery produces rich, full bodied wines from excellent fruit sourced from the Central Coast. The wines lean to the higher alcohol levels, but are always well balanced. Leading the charge again this year is Cary Thrasher, but with something totally new; he is bringing with him Opolo wine-maker, Chris Rougeot, to answer any questions you may have about winemaking or about the great wines of Opolo we will be tasting.
2014 Opolo Vineyards Viognier, Central Coast
LIST PRICE 22.00; OUR PRICE 18.99
Normally associated with the Rhone Valley in France, this white wine has found its home on the Central Coast in California and is a great alternative to Chardonnay. The crisp acidity accentuates the bouquet of pineapples, apricots, butterscotch and citrus blossoms. Barrel aging in French Oak has infused this floral wine with added complexity and a toasty finish.
2014 Opolo Vineyards Roussanne, Central Coast
LIST PRICE 24.00; OUR PRICE 22.99
Here is another grape from the Rhone Valley in France. It, too, is a great alternative to Chardonnay. This golden colored, full-bodied wine offers subtle hints of honey, pear, citrus and vanilla. The wine finishes with a lingering, terror driven minerality combined with toastiness attributed to cellaring on French and Hungarian oak.
2011 Opolo Vineyards Concerto, Paso Robles
LIST PRICE 32.00; OUR PRICE 27.95
Concerto is a Bordeaux-style blend made from grapes sourced from the rolling hills of Paso Robles. Aging in French and American oak barrels highlights concentrated flavors of cherry and black current. There are ample soft tannins contributing to the long satisfying finish. Ask the winemaker himself about the blend.
2011 Opolo Vineyards Montagna-Mare, Central Coast
LIST PRICE 28.00; OUR PRICE 23.99
Montagna-Mare is a blend of Barbera and Sangiovese grapes from carefully selected vineyards. This “Italianesque” wine has a very long, spicy finish that is fruit driven yet integrated with judicious oak aging.
2012 Opolo Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon, Summit Creek
LIST PRICE 24.00; OUR PRICE 22.99
There are aromas and flavors of sesame candy, walnut nougat, and mulberries with a silky, crisp, dry-yet-fruity medium body and an interesting, crisp finish revealing shades of raisin, sweet spice, mocha, and cedar with soft tannins. It is a nice steak wine showing good fruit balanced with firm tannins.
2012 Opolo Vineyards Petite Sirah, Paso Robles
LIST PRICE 24.00; OUR PRICE 22.99
This dark wine presages the dark berry, plum and blueberry to be discovered. It is a well extracted wine exhibiting vanilla bean, black licorice and cherry. It is a full-bodied wine with firm tannins and a long finish.
2013 Opolo Vineyards Mountain Zinfandel, Paso Robles
LIST PRICE 28.00; OUR PRICE 23.99
Appropriated named for where the grapes are grown, this full-bodied Zinfandel has plenty of black cherry, plum and spice and is framed by soft tannins and balanced acidity. This Zinfandel won the Double Gold Medal at the San Francisco Chronicle competition.
