As the holidays are upon us, this will be our last tasting event of the year. In as much as we will be moving throughout January, we will not schedule additional events until after the move is completed. Lisa Wherry, of Chateau and Estates will be visiting us to assume hosting duties and pour some of her most excellent Champagnes and other sparkling wines. This is always a fun event and presents an excellent opportunity to taste the latest vintages before committing ones hard earned cash to gift purchases or to celebratory needs. For those of you who unhappily cannot attend…Happy Holidays!
2009 Schramsberg Mirabelle Brut, North Coast
LIST PRICE 22.50; OUR PRICE 19.99
Stylistically, Mirabelle Brut resembles some of its French cousins with its elegant, toasty aroma which leads into crisp and complex flavors on the palate. It is a unique blend of hand-harvested bunches of Napa, Sonoma and Mendocino county Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Big, buttery aromas of baked apple, lemon curd, nutmeg, malt and bread dough, as well as a whiff of buttered toast leads to balanced flavors of citrus, white flowers and butterscotch. The citrusy, nutty finish refuses to fade. Mirabelle pairs well with shellfish, light appetizers or hearty, vegetable-based soups.
2009 Domaine Carneros Brut, Carneros
LIST PRICE 30.00; OUR PRICE 24.99
This is the signature wine of the estate, which was founded by the Champagne house Taittinger in 1987. The wine spent three years sur-lie before being disgorged contributing to aromas of baked apple, golden apple, lime zest, honeycomb and vanilla. This graceful wine features a remarkably well-integrated dosage and notes of toasty brioche often found in a fine aged cuvée. The finish is long and luxurious. Savor this Brut on its own, or enjoy its pairing versatility with fish, oysters and shellfish, poultry, most Asian cuisine and even rich cheeses. Wine Spectator awarded the wine a 93-point rating.
2010 Schramsberg Blanc de Blanc, North Coast
LIST PRICE 35.00; OUR PRICE 31.99
Schramsberg Blanc de Blancs gained international recognition in 1972 when then President Nixon served the wine at the historic “Toast to Peace” in Beijing, China. This all Chardonnay cuvée offers fresh aromas of green apple, juicy pineapple and ripe grapefruit. The fruitful nose is complemented by developed nuances of fresh-baked brioche and lemon zest on the palate.
2009 Schramsberg Blanc de Noir, North Coast
LIST PRICE 38.00; OUR PRICE 33.95
This sparkling wine is a brut style made from Pinot Noir, with a touch of Chardonnay added for length on the palate. It has been handcrafted using select cool climate North Coast vineyards, barrel fermentation, and extended aging in the historic hillside. The 2009 has concentrated aromas of red apple, apricot and orange marmalade, which are complemented with tropical notes of guava, mango & passion fruit. The fruitful nose is completed with essences of candied ginger and Meyer lemon tart. Flavors of orange, cherry and raspberry are present, followed by nuances of peach-berry cobbler. The wine enters crisp and lingers on the palate, finishing with a balanced and mouthwatering acidity.
Taittinger LaFrancaise Brut, Reims
LIST PRICE 55.00; OUR PRICE 49.99
This Champagne is a blend of 40% Chardonnay and 60% Pinot Noir some 30 vineyards. The wine is subtle overall, offering a creamy mousse and a pleasing juiciness to the notes of apricot tart, slivered almond, orchard blossom and apple. Wine Spectator gives it a 90-point rating: the rich and complex flavors of Brut La Francaise show just that extra touch of maturity. The wine has peach and almond flavors that contrast well with the taut, nervy edge. It’s full in the mouth and ripe, and works well both as an apéritif and a food Champagne.”
