It is a mere 3 weeks before Paso Robles celebrates its annual Harvest Wine Weekend, October 16–18. For those of you planning to make the trek, here are a few of the varietals you are apt to encounter. This wine country area is home to more than 200 wineries, mostly boutique and small family-owned. Many of the young boutique wineries have gained recognition for their fine wines featuring innovative and proprietary blends of Bordeaux, Rhône and Zinfandel varietals. Throughout the appellation there are more than 40 varietals planted and producing some quite excellent wines. Our supply is limited as we await new arrivals.
2013 Niner Sauvignon Blanc
LIST PRICE 18.00; OUR PRICE 14.99
Two vineyards contributed to this blend: Bootjack Ranch (90%) and Heart Hill Vineyard (10%). Interestingly, the blend is 90% Sauvignon Blanc, 5% Sauvignon Musqué and 5% Sémillon. The nose is redolent with tropical fruit aromas of ripened pineapple and papaya, accented with a touch of honey. Half of the harvest was picked late to ripen and help build these tropical essences. The round and creamy palate carries the wine through to a crisp finish. This is a great price for this fine wine.
2014 Robert Hall Chardonnay
LIST PRICE 20.00; OUR PRICE 14.99
Double Gold/Best of Class of Region – California State Fair Wine Competition 2015
Double Gold Medal – New World International Wine Competition 2015
The wine features pear, apple and peach aromas with a suggestion of vanilla spice. It is rich from barrel fermentation and aging, showing peach, pear and butterscotch flavors. It is round and medium-bodied with balancing acidity and toasty oak that lengthens the finish.
2011 Opolo Vineyards Rousanne
LIST PRICE 24.00; OUR PRICE 19.99
Roussanne is a white-wine grape named after its skin color (when ripe), a reddish-gold pigment that equates to the French word “roux” (meaning russet, or reddish-brown). The wine reminds of pear, cantaloupe, pineapple, and lemon curd with accents of honeysuckle, some chalkiness and vanilla.
2013 Peachy Canyon Chill House Rosé
LIST PRICE 16.00; OUR PRICE 13.99
The Chill House Rosé starts off with bursts of fresh melon, quince, rosehips, and Meyer lemon. On the palate, watermelon, strawberry, and ripe honeydew combine with subtle notes of persimmon and hibiscus flower. This summery, fruit-forward rosé is as dry as they come, with crisp acid and some minerality throughout the palate.
2012 Robert Hall Merlot
LIST PRICE 23.00; OUR PRICE 19.99
Rich aromas of ripe black cherry accentuated by hints of cedar translate on the palate to rich flavors mirroring the aromas and are complemented by soft, silky tannins on the finish. The blend is quite interesting: 82% Merlot, 11% Cabernet Franc, 6% Petite Sirah and 1% Petit Verdot.
2013 Rabbit Ridge Zinfandel, Westside
LIST PRICE 20.00; OUR PRICE 17.99
Rabbit Ridge was founded in 1981 by Erich Russell in Healdsburg, CA. The winery quickly became known for some of the best value wines, as well as many highly acclaimed luxury wines in California. The winery moved to Paso Robles, CA in 2000 to expand the business and to increase vineyard acreage. This Zin shows lively raspberry and cherry aromas opening to crisp, layered plum, spice and coconut-tinged oak flavors. The tannins are appealingly soft and round making the medium to full-bodied wine soft and delicious.
