Zonin Prosecco, Veneto
LIST PRICE 16.50; OUR PRICE 14.99
This Prosecco comes from the Veneto near the northern border. The grape of Prosecco is called Gera. The must is obtained from gently pressed grapes. Half of the must undergoes an initial fermentation at 64°F while the remaining 50% is stored at 32°F as unfermented must. Following the traditional Charmat method, the must is combined and transferred into pressurized stainless steel tanks where the wine transforms into sparkling wine. The resulting wine has beautiful mineral notes with white flowers and stone fruits and on the palate it is dry with an abundance of almonds and fresh citrus notes. Prosecco goes with so many dishes including caprese salad, crab cakes, pan-seared salmon with lemon and basil, chicken pesto with angel hair pasta and works well with many fine desserts.
Zonin Sparkling Rosé, Veneto
LIST PRICE 16.00; OUR PRICE 13.99
This is a lightly-colored sparkling rosé with a fine and seductively delicate perlage. It is pleasant, intense and fruity, evoking memories of wisteria flowers and apples. Well-blended and delightful, it is soft and smooth on the palate with floral notes and a hint of almond. This wine is excellent as an apéritif and is an ideal accompaniment to hors d’oeuvres risottos, fragrant fried foods and grilled fish; or try it with cream sauce dishes, shellfish, sole, halibut, salmon, tuna, mild cheese and cream based dips. For the supreme trivia minded: the grape vinified here is the Nerello Mascalese.
Ogni Giorno Lambrusco dell’Emilia, Emilia-Romagna
LIST PRICE 9.95; OUR PRICE 7.99
This Lambrusco is light, fresh, fruity and simply enjoyable. It is best served with a slight chill to the bottle. This frizzante (little bubble) Lambrusco shows all those classic flavors of super ripe cherry, raspberry and strawberry with lovely palate density. Long term lovers of this Italian wine style need to look no further than this authentic stunner.
2011 Tenuta Ca’Bolani Refosco, Friuli
LIST PRICE 16.00; OUR PRICE 13.99
The Ca’ Bolani estate is within the district of Aquileia, from where wines were held in high esteem at the Imperial court during Roman times. Their characteristically intense personality stems from the area’s strong sunlight, from the proximity of the sea, from the zone’s soils and from its exclusive microclimate. This lovely wine from the Friuli-Venezia Giulia of northernmost Italy if made from the Refosco grape.
2010 Zonin Amarone della Valpolicella, Veneto
LIST PRICE 59.00; OUR PRICE 49.99
The grapes for blending Amarone in Valpolicella, Veneto are Corvina (60%), Rondinella (35%) and Molinara (5%). The grapes are semi-dried on wooden racks and stored in well-ventilated rooms for about 120 days. The must is macerated on the skins for seven to eight days following vinification at a low temperature. The fermentation process is long and slow, lasting for four to six weeks. The wine then ages in 792 gallon Slavonian oak barrels for two years, and for an additional six months in the bottle before being released. The bouquet is elegant and floral showing sweet cherries with scents of violet, licorice, sweet tobacco and exotic spices. The palate is medium to full-bodied revealing cranberry, leather and cloves that lead to substantial tannins with a lasting finish. This is a perfect accompaniment for osso buco, braised veal shanks with polenta or with cheeses like Parmigiano Reggiano, Pecorino, Gouda or blue cheeses like Gorgonzola, Stilton or Roquefort.
