I can’t think of a better white wine for partying than Prosecco due to its lightness, medium sparkle and light fruity character. Thus begins our Super Bowl party. A variety of interesting beers is a good way to go, but such is not our way today. For the kinds of foods typically being served, a variety of Zinfandels offer the best solution. Besides going well with food this varietal stands well on its own. Of course, for some rabid fans, an easy drinking Chardonnay is a must. For those who want to end on a high note we offer Fess Parkers, “The Big Easy”. There is nothing “easy” about this wine for this is a monster that will stand up to anything, anywhere, any time. (Go Niners!—sorry Ravens fans)
Canella Prosecco, Venezia
LIST PRICE 14.00; OUR PRICE 11.99
These Prosecco grapes were grown at various altitudes in the hills and high plain near Treviso, in a mild and dry microclimate. Vinified by means of the Charmat method, this is a lovely spumante characterized by its lively aromas and fruit and the ideal balance of acidity and light sweetness, which renders it both mellow and fresh. A lengthy sojourn on the lees endows it with concentration and intensity of flavors. Dry and persistent on the palate, it serves well as an apéritif.
2010 Sebastiani Chardonnay, Sonoma County
LIST PRICE 14.00; OUR PRICE 9.99
This Chardonnay displays all the style and complexity one would expect from Sebastiani’s excellent Chardonnay vineyards and judicial use of oak barrels. The nose is a luscious blend of lemon curd, yellow apple, vanilla and caramel. The palate is moderately creamy with bright apple fruit and hints of butterscotch leading to a toasty finish.
2007 Michael-David 7 Deadly Zins, Lodi
LIST PRICE 16.50; OUR PRICE 14.99
90 points and featured in the “Fifty Super Domestic Wine Values” from Robert Parker: “The 2007 7 Deadly Zins is a knock-out bargain. Aged completely in American oak, it is loaded with berry fruit, pepper, spice, and earth characteristics. This rich, full-bodied, opulent, luscious Zinfandel can be drunk now and over the next several years.” It was blended from seven of Lodi’s superior vineyards, and is a consistent bargain.
2006 Alexander Valley Vyds Redemption Zinfandel, Dry Ck Valley
LIST PRICE 22.50; OUR PRICE 17.99
This Zinfandel is a solid structured wine, with firm tannins and integrated oak nuances. It is balanced with forward fruit flavors of blackberry and plum, and accompanied by a hint of black pepper spice. The rich flavors of this wine pair well with charcoal grilled burgers and steak or spicy foods such as spare ribs and chili. It received 90 Points from Wine & Spirits Magazine.
2008 Dancing Lady Old Vine Zinfandel, Alexander Valley
LIST PRICE 25.00; OUR PRICE 22.75
The Della Costa family literally set down roots for their Zinfandel vines and clones thereof over a hundred years ago. The wine is ripe and a bit untamed, but appealing for its youthful burst of fruit. It offers aromas of baked cherry and toasty herbs, with flavors of cassis and spicy oak. Only 358 cases were made.
2009 Fess Parker “The Big Easy”, Santa Barbara County
LIST PRICE 30.00; OUR PRICE 25.99
Fess Parker Winery wanted to pay homage to one of its favorite cities, a culinary Mecca and a great supporter of the winery. Notes of blackberry, plum, smoked meat, acacia flower, vanilla and pepper are found on the nose along with flavors of blueberry, blackberry, dark chocolate, black cherry, allspice and vanilla on the palate. This is a meaty, well structured blend that carries one to a long lengthy finish that is awash with dense chocolaty tannins. The blend is 61% Syrah, 23% Petite Sirah and 16 % Grenache.
